One of the simplest and most innovative solutions I have seen to reducing CO2 emissions in the supply chain. The industry standard for handling frozen foods has been -18˚ C since the 1930s. But technology in food supply chains has advanced significantly since then with the result that the temperature can be raised to -15c without compromising food safety. It would take the equivalent of four million cars off road in terms of CO2 emissions. Salute the leadership of Thomas Eskesen in driving this forward.
When it comes to seafood – from catching fresh produce to transporting it to restaurants, supermarkets and homes – the cold chain plays an essential role in ensuring that products are stored at a temperature that ensures food quality and safety. Together with key industry stakeholders, the Join The Move to -15°C Coalition is leading a transformative initiative that aims to shift temperature set points within the cold chain from -18°C to -15°C. Doing so could reduce the annual carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 3.8 million cars off the road each year, while also saving costs and securing the world's food supply in the future.
