The United Nations University (UNU) Hub at #UCalgary on Empowering Communities to Adapt to Environmental Change is the world’s first UNU Hub focused on water, created in partnership with the UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
The UNU Hub will collaborate with UNU-INWEH to develop the scientific understanding, solutions, and skilled workforce required to mitigate and adapt to climate threats that affect ecosystems, economies, personal safety, and ways of life around the world.
The hub’s research and training activities will address the challenges of environmental change, paired with outreach to advance policy-relevant university research. It will develop collaborative programs for UCalgary researchers and students seeking opportunities that are impactful and relevant to global practice and policy.
The hub’s reach will be global, with outcomes that are accessible and applicable beyond Canada, extending to the Global South. https://bit.ly/3TxUw1QThe United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH)
Water is is not only the issue of health and sanitation in the global South, it's a serious issue that is threatening us everywhere in the world and it's it's tied to to economies. It's a political economy problem and we don't have solutions for it. So what better opportunity for us to tackle this issue together with some of the best scientists of the world. And I'm really honored that the United Nations University has chosen the University of Calgary. With the home of the world's first UNU hub, this new hub I'm so excited about will have 4 research clusters so world class scholars can bring their expertise to four essential areas. The changes occurring in aquatic ecosystems, infectious diseases in a changing climate. How we can predict water sustainability and resilience in indigenous communities. The Hopewell creative vibrant intellectual environment to advance policy relevant. Research. The hub will provide both graduate and undergraduate students with the skills, determination and empowerment to address a lot of our global challenges. The Hub will improve the university's reputation and water and health research and education. And finally the harbor world accelerate the implementation of the University of Calgary's vision and strategic plan. We've been known for being strong in so many different aspects, but right now and today, we're talking about our strength in water and certainly we have the capacity of people. Across all different faculties on this campus that are really showcasing ways to think about water differently from science and arts to engineering to medicine, we are really shifting the way in which researchers nationally and internationally are talking about water. The the attitude here, you know, that's it's it's about how to get things done and and then of creating and finding solutions for it. And we're lucky to have selected you University of Calgary as a. But that that has very strong reasons. Innovation is is part of your agenda. The world is tired of us telling them that the doomsday is coming and there is no solution. They want to know about the solutions. We're committed also to to the Government of Canada to to showcase good solutions and if if there is expertise in this country to make sure the world benefits from it. We find ourselves some challenging times and have generally thrilled to extend a warm welcome for everyone. As we commence activities in the New Year or encourage your active participation and the HUBS Initiative, so lets us to collaborate to establish a global network of excellence bridging the gap between science, policy and society.
It is an honour to be part of the game changing team and opportunity around water and environmental and societal health at University of Calgary
