UNU-INWEH Science Talks (Online, Open to Public) Role of People’s Perception in Flood Management: Application of a Unified Strategy for Disaster Resilience Speaker: Professor Nirupama Agrawal, Adjunct Professor in Disaster and Emergency Management, UNU-INWEH Time: 10 am EST, 18 September 2024 Event link: https://lnkd.in/g-tRVt6g Historically, floods have caused more economic and social damage around the world than other types of natural #hazards. The recent #flood events in many Canadian provinces have raised concerns, including whether communities should be educated with useful #knowledge on hazard risks and resilience so they would be motivated to be involved in such discussions and play a vital role in building #resilience to disasters. Increasing awareness that perceived risk can differ from the real threat can significantly affect how people think about adaptation and mitigating #disaster risks. In this Science Talk, Prof Niru Agrawal will identify gaps between people’s perception of exposure, susceptibility, and a lack of coping capacity, including quantifying these gaps and objectively assessing the highlighted parameters by measuring disaster resilience as the outcome. Using actual geomorphological datasets of a Canadian case study, socioeconomic factors from a Census, and peoples’ perceptions through an in-person survey, she will demonstrate the application of a unified strategy for disaster resilience in #Canada, which hopefully will encourage a broader debate in favour of the unified approach. The webinar will close with a Q&A session to address any questions from attendees. #webinar #sciencetalk #unuinweh #disasterriskreduction

The UN Think Tank on Water. Targeted research. Capacity development. Public outreach.
About us
UNU-INWEH is one of the United Nations University (UNU) institutes, an academic arm of the UN. The University’s 13 research and training institutes are located in 12 countries and address a range of global development challenges. UNU-INWEH specializes on water for development, working, primarily, with countries in the Global South, and addressing water issues of global significance. Water is the entry point to all UNU-INWEH’s activities, including environment and health. The Institute addresses primarily continental water resources challenges. UNU-INWEH works to bridge the gap between the wealth of evidence and research that exists on water resources, and the practical needs that political leaders and decision makers in low- and middle-income countries have. UNU-INWEH is linked to key processes in the UN system, and represents the entire UNU in UN-Water – a cross-agency group in the UN and international partners working on water and sanitation issues globally. UNU-INWEH’s research has a diverse range of stakeholders, including politicians and policymakers in developing countries, concerned with water, health and environment issues; donors and implementing agencies from the North and the South; scientific community in water-related research institutions and academia; UN agencies and other international and regional organizations and networks; host country and national partners in Canada, media; and civil society. UNU-INWEH was established in 1996, as a public service agency and a subsidiary body of the UNU. Its operations are secured through long-term host-country and core-funding agreements with the Government of Canada. The Institute is located in Hamilton, Canada; its facilities are supported by McMaster University. UNU-INWEH is the only Institute in UNU that focuses entirely and solely on water issues. It is also the only entirely water-focused UN entity in Canada.

In wrapping-up the 1st ICAO #AAM2024 Symposium, Pascal Luciani underlined the collaboration between United Nations entities. In the "Development of Harmonized Frameworks in Support of UN System Missions" session, we heard how ICAO, together with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS), and other sister entities (UNHCR, UN-Habitat, ITU, UNU, FAO, UNODC, UPU), are partnering to enhance the development of harmonized unmanned aviation frameworks. The distinguished speakers, Michele Merkle, Maurizia Calo', Franklyn Frimpong PhD. PMP, Raf Tuts, Kaveh Madani and Joey Hanna shared their perspectives regarding unmanned aviation and UN missions. The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) has identified subsidy reform as critical to raising a significant portion of the estimated $700 billion needed annually to close the biodiversity finance gap by 2030. Likewise, globally, fossil fuel subsidies amount to around $7 trillion annually, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Redirecting even a portion of these subsidies toward climate action could provide substantial funding for renewable energy, climate resilience, and green infrastructure. Join us in UN Environment Management Group second dialogue on repurposing subsidies on Tuesday 17 September to explore strategies undertaken for reforming and repurposing these subsidies by the relevant UN agencies . https://lnkd.in/ed8aHKGQ Registration here : https://lnkd.in/e3A84AJX Topics of discussion include: • Measuring and reforming harmful subsidies • Enhancing stakeholder coordination • Establishing best practices in policy-making In the first dialogue in May we had valuable presentations from UNEP, UNDP, UNCTAD, and the OECD on various subsidy reform initiatives. Highlights included: • The Harmful fisheries subsidies – David Vivas Eugui, UN Trade • Aligning public spending with biodiversity objectives – Katia Karousakis, OECD • The nature of subsidies – Mariana Bellot, BIOFIN • Fossil fuel subsidy reform to support climate action – Philip Gass, IISD The second dialogue will focus on measuring the impacts of subsidies to better inform policymaking and promote sustainable economic growth. Presenters from WTO, World Bank, FAO, GEF, and Sveriges Riksbank will participate. The third dialogue, scheduled for November, will focus on lessons learned at the country level and opportunities for interagency and interministerial collaboration. As a result of these deliberations we hope to prepare a compendium of UN tools and services to support countries and UN country teams in reforming subsidies, along with recommendations for enhancing interagency collaboration. https://lnkd.in/ed8aHKGQ

UNU-INWEH Science Talks (Online, Open to Public) A Novel Approach for Quantifying Soil Degradation: Using Big Data and AI for Soil Health Management Speaker: Professor Nima Shokri, Executive Co-Director, UNU Hub on Engineering to Face Climate Change at the Hamburg University of Technology Time: 10 am EST, 11 September 2024 Event link: https://lnkd.in/gt_T_JSN Soils around the world face threats from various degradation processes, posing serious risks to food security, ecological integrity, #biodiversity, climate regulation, and socio-economic activities. Current methods for assessing #soil degradation often use arbitrary thresholds, limiting their effectiveness. Anticipating changes in soil degradation requires the integration of new approaches. In this Science Talk, Professor Nima Shokri will introduce the Soil Vulnerability Index (SVI), a continuous metric for spatio-temporal monitoring of soil degradation while providing both the extent and magnitude of the degradation. The SVI integrates indicators like the erosion rate, soil pH, electrical conductivity, and soil organic carbon. Applied across Europe, the SVI reveals higher vulnerability in southern regions and healthier conditions in northern and central areas. The approach uses machine learning algorithms to train models that relate the SVI to various environmental drivers, enabling predictions of soil vulnerability and future variations under different scenarios. This approach highlights the roles of #climate, #vegetation, and #land management in soil vulnerability and underscores the need for integrated approaches to soil #health and conservation. The webinar will close with a Q&A session to address any questions from attendees. #webinar #sciencetalk #unuinweh #soilhealth #savesoil #unuhub
