Has any one else with a research background experienced the problem that they are perceived as not able to perform administrative work? This week I had 9 rejections for administrative posts at the University of Sheffield. 3 for posts in research administrative support. Feedback for two posts commented that my background was in research, not in research administration. My research background meant I had no experience of admin. They pretty much implied that I was not capable of administration tasks. This was despite mentioning tasks like correspondence, ordering of equipment and processing invoices that are part of running research in my applications. There seems to be a blind spot where people can't see past the research, or don't know that running a research project also involves admin tasks. I wondered if anyone else with a research or academic background had experienced this problem? Or is it just at the University of Sheffield? Does anyone with a research background feel that there ability to perform admin skills is overlooked, maybe by those who don't know what research involves? Are researchers perceived as somehow unorganised? I just wondered. #UoS #UniversityofSheffield

Founder of College Apps Abroad 🌎 Certified Educational Planner 🎓 Helping students find and apply to the right universities and programs in the UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ and beyond ✈️
Advice for Australian universities (take it or leave it!): As someone who has worked for a number of Australian institutions and am now on the other side of the desk, I feel the need to call out the widespread ‘bad’ practices of Australian university contact centres - an experience I don’t have with universities in any other part of the world. I’m fortunate to be able to call on a number of personal contacts at certain unis when I have questions, but where I don’t know anyone, I have found that 99% of the time, replies from the general or even faculty-specific emails come back with generic, stock standard replies that include tons of links, irrelevant info and non-answers. Not only do they fail to address the nuances of my questions, but they are also impersonal, not relationship-building, not regionally specific and simply cause more frustration than necessary. In many cases where students don’t get their questions addressed, they choose to apply elsewhere - just sayin'! I understand that these types of changes involve major restructures and that staff have quotas for the number of queries they need to ‘close out’… But is not better to slow down for a second, and be helpful?

Senior Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY)
My recent post about the value of student affairs professionals in campus leadership has resonated with many of my colleagues. It's great to see new, mid and senior level colleagues reacting to it, which tells me that many of you think or experience this at your institutions. Let me add a bit more context. As someone who has been in higher education for 28 years, I can attest that student affairs professionals bring a unique perspective to the table. Having worked in various roles, including entry level positions (housing, academic advising, etc.), director, dean, and vice president, I've had to learn different skills, such as academic and administrative policies, legal considerations, crisis and risk management, facilities management, budgeting and strategic planning - you name it! And I'm not alone. Many student affairs professionals can attest that the skills we learn to every facet of campus. Not only do we study these skills in our academic programs, but we live them every day. Why? Because we never know what student/staff/faculty issue may walk through our doors. And, we are ready! My point? Archaic thinking about campus leadership sometimes keeps student affairs professionals on the fringes. While other administrators are critically important, the perspectives of SA staff add an important consideration to all campus decisions - students! Aren’t they why we do what we do? So, my advice to campus leaders is to seek out the perspectives of your SA staff at every level. You will be amazed at what you gain. #StudentAffairs #HigherEducation #CampusLeadership #StudentSuccess

Becoming a doctor might be the number one ambition for teenagers, but carving out a career as an artist or in the building trade is also desirable. Doctor has overtaken engineer (2) and teacher (3) in a top ten ranking of the most popular jobs for 13-16-year-olds in the UK, according to the annual BBC Bitesize Careers survey. Nearly one in ten chose it as their preferred career. Working in the building trade (10) and being an artist (8) are new entries for 2024, while architect and computer scientist dropped out of the 10. Footballer features in 7th place. The survey, of more than 4,000 teens in the UK, also found that young people would choose to work for the NHS (National Health Service) ahead of companies like Google and Disney. 💭 What career did you want to pursue when you were a teenager? Did it pan out? Let us know in the comments. Check out the full ranking here: https://lnkd.in/eMCPAGWx ✍ Jennifer Ryan 📸 Getty
