While the City provided its own summary of the public consultations, we wanted to give voice to what we heard from communities, particularly Indigenous, Black, racialized, immigrant, and low-income residents, and people with disabilities — those who have historically been, and currently are, often excluded from consultation processes and decision-making tables. #TOPoli #TorontoCityBudget #BudgetTO https://lnkd.in/gWrP74Tu

ADA Day was observed last week — a commemoration on July 26 of the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA was the first comprehensive law in the United States to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities and prohibit discrimination based on mental or physical disabilities. The day also serves to raise awareness and break down barriers that people with disabilities face. At WesleyLife, the anniversary of the ADA signing serves as a reminder of the ever-increasing importance of the organization's DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) platform and our ongoing efforts to expand and enhance it. Mind your language! Language matters and workplaces must always be respectful of others and their feelings. We strongly advocate for ‘person first’ language which emphasises the person first and the disability second . For example a person with Down Syndrome, a person who is blind, a person with hearing loss. If in doubt listen carefully to the person and how they describe themselves. Ask the person what their preference is. Remember disability can be visible or invisible and may or may not be disclosed. For further information refer to the Disability Act 2005, The Equality Act 2015, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. #UNCRPD #EUinmyregion #WorkAbility #labels #stigma #equality #diversityandinclusion AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation Cork Chamber Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Anne Rabbitte T.D. Today I would like to highlight an alarming report from ILGA-Europe and the European Disability Forum regarding the experiences of LGBTIQ persons with disabilities in Europe. * LGBTI persons with disabilities experience greater financial difficulties, especially for trans women. * Higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness. * Significant barriers in accessing healthcare, with high levels of inappropriate comments from healthcare providers. * High levels of discrimination in workplaces, healthcare, social services, and public spaces. * Increased incidents of harassment and violence, particularly targeting trans women and intersex people. Perpetrators of violence include family members, acquaintances, neighbors, and public servants. As we celebrate Pride and head towards the start of Disability Pride Month, we must remember that many disabled LGBTIQ people live in unsafe situations. As well as celebrating Pride, we must work to strengthen policies that address these inequities and put an end to discrimination. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/egq4CddR

Empowerment Coach & Inspirational Speaker | Founder at Crocker's Transformative Thinking | Championing Personal Growth & Transformation
Share a story of community impact made by a person with a disability. • Inclusion Canada's initiative on deinstitutionalization is a powerful example of impactful community advocacy led by individuals with disabilities. This initiative, aimed at transitioning people with intellectual disabilities from institutions to community living, underscores the significance of self-determination and inclusivity. By advocating for person-centered planning and the right to live in the community, this movement has made considerable strides in transforming how society supports individuals with intellectual disabilities, promoting their full participation and inclusion in community life. • To engage further, consider exploring resources on deinstitutionalization, watching documentaries on the subject, or participating in conversations about community living for people with intellectual disabilities to foster greater awareness and support for inclusivity (Inclusion Canada).
