Endangered migrating eagles impacted by Ukraine war, finds UEA's Charlie Russell 🦅 "The war in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on people and the environment. Our findings provide a rare window into how conflicts affect wildlife." "Migratory birds such as Greater Spotted Eagles are drastically declining all over the world and it’s imperative that we better understand and mitigate our effects on these charismatic species." The team found the birds flew further and less directly to breeding grounds, travelling an extra 85km on average. Migrations also took longer: 246 hours compared to 193 pre-conflict for females, and 181 hours compared to 125 pre-conflict for males. Males also travelled more slowly than in the years before the war. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDNVsUmg 📸 Hari K Patibanda #UkraineWar #Ukraine #Conflict #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies

💡 Did you know #5 A few days ago we asked you about the names of the refuges set up on our projects for certain animal species. ❄️ This name may not mean anything to you, but they are called hibernacula. Hibernaculum, in the singular, comes from the Latin name for the tent used by Roman troops during the winter truce, also known as "winter quarters". Like the Roman soldiers, our four-, six-, eight- and even thousand-legged friends are looking for a quiet place to set down. 🦎 A good knowledge of the habitats and needs of each species is therefore essential for their protection. Discover some examples of hibernacula set up on our projects ⬇️ #VINCI #VINCIConstruction #Environment #Biodiversity #Earthworks

Have you ever wondered what African penguin and seabird rangers do? This article from IOL covers the daily efforts of Yandisa Cwecwe, a ranger with one of our partners, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), on Robben Island. Cwecwe works to protect endangered African penguins, conducting field patrols, monitoring nests, and rescuing chicks. She highlights the challenges faced by the penguins, including diminishing food sources due to overfishing. Her work is crucial in the fight to prevent the extinction of African penguins, projected to potentially occur by 2035. For more details, you can read the full article below. #penguins #endandgeredspecies #africa #africanpenguins #rangers

Our current (and final for 2023) expedition takes the #CorpsofExploration aboard #EVNautilus south of the equator to #JarvisIsland, one of the most poorly mapped areas under US jurisdiction, where our high-resolution bathymetric #seafloormapping will add to the world’s baseline knowledge of this poorly studied part of the #PacificRemoteIslandsMarineNationalMonument (#PRIMNM). Jarvis Island encompasses approximately 1,100 acres of emergent #reef and land and 36,342 acres of submerged lands. The island is currently managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of the Pacific Remote Island Area Refuge Complex.

#UPUStampOfTheWeek: #Dragonfly stamp by Cyprus Post #DidYouKnow? Dragonflies have 360-degree vision, including the ability to see behind them👀 They are also one of the first flying #insects on earth, make the longest migration of any insect and are the most successful predators in the animal kingdom. They can be helpful in getting rid of mosquitos and certain harmful pests and are at the same time completely harmless to humans. More than 6,000 species have been described worldwide, with 32 seen in Cyprus. Dragonflies are important in maintaining the balance of the ecosystems and can be the indicator of clean environment, especially water💧 https://bit.ly/48obT9f Through the UPU WNS global #stamp database, you can find #stamps pertaining to any thematic area of your choosing 👉 bit.ly/upuwns #philately

Grizzly bears are the largest omnivores in North America. Reaching up to 800 pounds and 8 feet tall when standing, grizzly bears boast tremendous size and physical strength and unsurprisingly, have almost no enemies. Actually, they have just a single natural enemy — humans. Illegal killings, dwindling food sources, and habitat destruction are some of the major threats to their survival. Yet sadly, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service could soon remove federal protection from grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide ecosystems. We must protect these icons of the wild. Join us in telling the Service you oppose stripping Endangered Species Act protection from grizzlies 👉 biodiv.us/49YPqRe

Ecosia is the real deal. Partners since the beginning, their support has allowed HOMMES ET TERRE to scale from a few restoration sites in Burkina Faso, to thousands of hectares yearly in 3 countries. It's nice to show pictures of a site that's turning green again, but it's also important to emphasize what goes behind it: 👣 Engaging the communities who are the landowners and key stakeholders in the project (sometimes >1 year of discussions before we enter into a partnership). 🗺 Mapping the site. The history, the roads & villages, the topography, the causes of degradation, ... A combination of site visits, drone images and discussions with the villages. 🌳 Technical restoration work. Digging halfmoons with correct dimensions and spatial requirements, according to topograhy, selecting the right native species, collecting the seeds locally, forming the communities in sowing and planting techniques, ... 🤺 Protecting. Building mechanisms such as fences, hedges, fire paths, and appointing forest guardians in the community. Overgrazing is often one of the root causes that started the negative cycle of degradation. 📃 Monitoring, evaluating and re-iterating on all of the above. ... and so much more. That's the real work of restoration. It's a pleasure to work with a partner who's side by side in this whole process!
Re-greening the desert... with half-moons 🌳🌙 In the Sahel, Senegal, our partners HOMMES ET TERRE plant trees in pits shaped like half-moons. Here, it’s dry for most of the year, but then it rains heavily for just a few weeks, so you have to make the most out of this water. Half-moons retain water for as long as possible after the rains have passed, and increase the chances of the seeds to germinate. Just look at the difference these half-moons are making 🤩 But we might not see these results if it weren’t for... fennets! These are fences built with nets that our partners put up around the half-moons to protect the trees from grazing animals 🐐 #Senegal #regreening #halfmoons
