If you're one of the 17M viewers who watched the rain-soaked Grammy’s last weekend, you’ll likely agree that one of the standout moments was Luke’s Comb’s and Tracy Chapman’s duet of “Fast Car”. It was a moment 35 years in the making, which was the last time Chapman performed that song on that stage. UEG's Matt Ostrower gives us a look into the epic performance and the power of music.

🎸 7 fixes to ensure a bright future for bands 🎸 The question is: are they are ready to work? 1. Forget getting signed 📃 If you are a band YOU NEED TO BE THE LABEL. You cannot afford to give away 80% of the value. If there are 3-5 of you that cannot be diluted so much. Oh, and manage yourselves until you are cash positive (including all rent and other bills). 2. Cut your recording costs ✂ No studios. No producers. Learn to make your own music. 3. It is all about the music BUT release A LOT MORE OF IT 📈 Get over the idea of album. Write and record a lot of music. Be in release mode all the time. 4. Share that journey on socials 🤳 Sorry, being the moody, silent types is done. All band members need to be social animals and engage audiences in the creative process. TikTok is primed for that. 5. Collaborate 🤝 Bands have never traditionally collaborated. Change that - share fan bases and drive discovery. 6. Own your audience 🔒 Get your fans onto a database you own. Then figure out the direct monetisation of that fan base. Your superfans will pay you A LOT for unique live experiences. 7. Be relentless 🏃♂️ The work ethic of most band is pathetic. That's why pop acts win in the new streaming era. Do everything above, over and over and over again. Also, let's correct some bits in this article from Will Hodgkinson in today's edition of The Times. ✅ You can be abbrasive. Our biggest act on 7.5m monthly listeners is incredibly abbrasive. ❌ Editorial playlists don't matter. They are not the reason bands aren't breaking. Our biggest act on 7.5m monthly listeners didn't get playlists. ❌ A Grammy will make zero impact on your core business - unlike everything above. ✅ "The very notion of live music is in a state of flux." It is - time to reinvent what we mean by live. Until streaming pays the bills maybe don't play live at all. Wait until other peoples money will fund it? #newmodel #musicbusiness #rocknroll https://lnkd.in/e4CBwAMZ
