ICYMI - Terrific article By E Fuller Torrey, M.D. about the bipartisan push to open sufficient psychiatric beds to adequately care for individuals who may require several weeks of hospitalization, sufficient time for trials of clozapine, the most effective antipsychotic, as well as long-acting injectable antipsychotics. He writes, "Stabilization ultimately requires more than just medication; Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams and Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) for those who are unaware of their own illness are also needed, as well as attention to housing and rehabilitation, such as is available in the clubhouse (Fountain House) model. But stabilization in a hospital is the first requirement." When a person is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, counseling is often just the first step in helping them find stability. Often, they need access to medical care and social services and someone they can trust to guide them through the process and act as their advocate. Individuals discharged from emergency rooms, psychiatric inpatient care, or the criminal justice system, as well as the unhoused, are especially vulnerable.
