Absolutely right. The growth of an economy is inherently reliant on the biosphere being stable. However, our current economics is not taking into account the true costs of growth on our biosphere, and therefore politicians are not taking this cost into account either. Economics must treat the economy as a constituent of the biosphere, and respect the biophysical constraints to growth. The pollution as a result of our economic activity is not only making it harder to grow economies in the future due to the biosphere becoming more unstable due to climate change, but it is also leaving a planet in a dire state for future generations. It is incredibly warming to see that politicians such as Clive Lewis are beginning to realise this, and that the economy, growth and climate change are all interlinked.

This is the kind of #political #leadership you need to be actually serious about saving this #planet. The message is very clearly put - clarity of this kind just doesn't exist - neither with the wider political class, nor with the profit-hungry #capitalistic overlords. If you cannot accept that you are simply ruining everything for your own grandchildren, and just adding up #generational #wealth is not going to cut-it, then you are just fooling yourself. Planet is not going to wait for you to wake-up to this reality, it will just become #uninhabitable for not only us as a species, but for each and every thriving living being. If we continue to behave the way we do and keep running after #mythical constructs of capitalism, money, growth, profits, we will perish and take everything along with us. Hope is difficult to find in this day and age, but glad to see some #leadership waking up to it. Kudos to Clive Lewis on setting up a vision, and standing up against the very sponsors of the political establishment - growth and profit mongering billionaires. Headlines scream about how new homes are destroying habitats, but is this truly the full picture? The data tells a different story: 👉 50% of farmland ponds have disappeared over the last century, devastating habitats for amphibians and invertebrates. 👉 Hedgerow loss has wiped out essential wildlife corridors, with Scotland losing half its hedgerows in the 20th century. 👉 Field margins—once teeming with life—have shrunk under intensive farming, reducing vital spaces for pollinators and small mammals. 👉 Overuse of fertilisers and pesticides not only damages ecosystems but also results in pollinator declines, directly threatening food security. Meanwhile, housing accounts for just 8.7% of England’s land. Yes, thoughtful development matters, but let’s not ignore the fact that biodiversity losses in agricultural land—nearly 70% of England—are just as, if not more, significant. It’s time to face the facts. Modern farming practices and agricultural intensification are driving biodiversity decline. Housing has become the convenient scapegoat for a much larger problem that requires urgent attention. We need an honest conversation about how farming and land use can evolve to support both biodiversity and food production.
