How many men do you know who identify as living with a Disability? How many fathers do you know who identify as living with a Disability? This study is a great start to better understanding "the life and parenting experiences of fathers with disabilities". The study was controlled for socioeconomic and demographic factors, but I wonder how disparities in resonance with the word/label "Disability" might have impacted the results. Because populations of the global majority living in the United States have a history of trauma and abuse that deter adoption of the term "Disability", I can imagine there might be individuals who identify in the "No Disabilities" category who may in fact be undiagnosed and/or lack access to adequate, identity-aware care. Likewise, there could be individuals in the 1+/2+ categories who are under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed for a variety of reasons. The study also compared Disabled Fathers to Non-Disabled Fathers. I would love to see a comparison to the other person(s) in the second parent/guardian role. Are kids more likely to stay in the home with Disabled Fathers if they also have a Disabled co-parent/guardian? What if the Disabled father is not the first Disabled parent in his family? What if the Disabled father became Disabled after the onset of fatherhood? What questions do you have about Disabled Fathers? Each March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), works to highlight the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities. The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.
