I often see people stuck with a limited vision of the future and the possibilities technological innovation will open up. An example I like to give is an autonomous swarm of robots extracting the mineral resources of the asteroid belt for a space industry colonizing the outer solar system. These will need to cooperate and coordinate, communicate, exchange propellant, transport and transfer ownership of the extracted raw materials, refine them, manage semi-finished products, etc. In the limited view of the critics, therefore: 1) This scenario or others like it will never happen; or 2) Robots will pay using banknotes for the resources they need and notaries with their dusty stacks of papers for property registers; or 3) The new technologies for native solutions to an autonomous interplanetary space economy will be born perfect, without experimentation and errors that allow their progressive development. In my opinion, each of these possibilities is wrong. Innovation can only come from experimentation, with mistakes to learn from, in technology, business models, marketing, etc. The inevitable imperfections of new technologies should therefore not be seen as proof of their uselessness.

In today's rapidly evolving landscape, staying ahead means embracing change, especially when it comes to technology. It is no secret that operators who embrace new technologies find themselves at the forefront of innovation, instead of catching up to it -- leading their industries into uncharted territories. This is most prevalent in asset integrity management (AIM). Everyday new technologies and methodologies emerge in ultrasonics, electromagnetics, radiography and almost every form of NDT. There are enormous leaps in the unmanned vehicles that carry NDT technologies like drones and robotics. Digital workflows and documentation are becoming the norm for most. And now, Big Data, IIoT, and digital twin are transforming the way mechanical integrity can be managed. As someone who started in this industry over 40 years ago, pushing a probe and cranking a pill, documenting everything on a big chief tablet with a number two pencil, this evolution has been really profound to witness I have always had an affinity for technology. I have witnessed “creative destruction” in our industry with my own eyes. Creative destruction is essential for introducing new and emerging technologies, new processes and methods, even new ways of organizing a business. Without it, businesses are prone to getting stuck in a rut and eventually dragging down entire industries. Just look at Netflix and Blockbuster, or the evolution of music from eight track tapes to cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, all the way to streaming. In my experience, a critical aspect of embracing technological change is to actively foster a culture of continuous learning. It's not necessarily about adopting new technologies, but more about encouraging your teams to gain the skills necessary to leverage these technologies effectively. People that invest in training and development are not just preparing themselves and their workforce for the future; they are shaping the future itself. End users of these technologies -- the actual operators that depend on them to ensure their assets are mechanically sound and maintained in a fashion that optimizes their cost of ownership and keeps their plants reliable and environmentally safe -- must cultivate an environment where taking calculated risks is encouraged. The path to innovation is not without its hurdles, but those willing to venture into the unknown, armed with a robust strategy and a resilient mindset, are most often the ones who reap the greatest rewards. As we navigate through this era of unprecedented technological advancements, our ability to adapt, learn, and innovate will determine our success. A few days ago, Noemi Jimenez-Redondo, our Research and Innovation Director, was in Valencia (#Spain) visiting one of the #demo sites of the OMICRON H2020 project, coordinated by CEMOSA. Specifically, this technical demonstrator is the A-7 highway (Mediterranean corridor), in particular along the belt surrounding the first crown of Valencia’s metropolitan area. Thanks to Pavasal (responsible partner of this demo) for the progress. This technical demonstrator allowed the testing in real-life scenarios of two different technologies developed in the project to improve the safety and efficiency of road maintenance work in the field: OMICRON robotic platform and AR and VR teleoperation. OMICRON multi-purpose 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 is capable of operating in multiple road maintenance interventions allowing human-robot cooperation providing a cost-efficient and productive solution taking over higher risk operations from works, and minimizing workers’ exposure to live traffic. During this demonstration two of its capabilities were tested: Sealing of surface pavement cracks, an important improvement on the maintenance of asphalt surface which allows the robotic modular platform to automatically detect and seal the crack through deep learning models. Removal of lane marking, which uses a laser-based innovative concept for paint removal with specific texture to surface. OMICRON 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 allows the operator to take part in interventions remotely, intervening and executing their part in the collaborative steps that require human operation. The goal is to enhance the safety of the road operators.
