E-bike and e-scooter usage is rising in many major cities – but so are fires caused by the batteries that power these devices. There are a few contributing factors but a lack of awareness among consumers is a big one. In fact, 43% of e-bike owners are unaware their e-bike contains a lithium-ion battery. This week, ULSE is attending National League of Cities #CitySummit23 where our Executive Director David Steel will address leaders from across the country on how safety standards can help address e-mobility challenges and how we can be a resource in making cities safer and more sustainable. We’ve all been there – cooking in the kitchen when suddenly, the smoke alarm blares. You quickly disconnect it to finish up, promising yourself you’ll reconnect it later. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t always happen, leaving you and your loved ones at risk. The latest UL 217 update helps prevent this by addressing common causes of smoke alarm removal, like cooking, with new, stricter testing requirements for nuisance alarms. This Fire Prevention Week, we’re shining a spotlight on this critical smoke alarm standard update, designed to keep pace with evolving safety needs and real-life consumer habits. #FirePreventionWeek #SmokeAlarms #FireSafety

Those impacted by #HurricaneHelene are still experiencing its devastating effects such as flooding, road closures, and power outages. It's crucial to remain vigilant even following the storm, especially when using a portable generator during power outages. 🏡 Only operate generators outdoors ⚠️ Place at least 20 ft away from home ✅ Only use generators certified to safety standards Learn more about preventing CO poisoning from portable generators: https://lnkd.in/eGcpkafw #carbonmonoxide #COpoisoning #COsafety

🚨 New data reveals a concerning reality: 61% of households report having little to no knowledge about carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, with 26% admitting they have no knowledge at all. 🚨 According to the latest U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report on the Usage and Functionality of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Households (SCOA) survey, this lack of awareness is alarming, especially since carbon monoxide is known as the "silent killer." This report highlights the urgent need for greater CO safety education. UL Standards & Engagement is dedicated to addressing this critical issue. We recently conducted a #survey on the Usage and Functionality of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Households (SCOA survey). The survey is an in-home quantitative assessment of the functionality of residential smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, as well as resident use and knowledge of smoke and CO alarm systems.
