We are inviting young leaders to join our Green Digital Action youth event at COP29 Azerbaijan on 12 November as well as to participate in the conversation online! The event will amplify voices of youth in the discussions on the COP29 Green Digital Action Declaration. It will engage leaders, innovators, and activists in an intergenerational dialogue to explore their perspectives on the role of digital technologies in climate action. The digital sector has an environmental dilemma. 🚨 Digital companies are critical for the transition to net-zero, but they must face their own challenges, such as out-of-control energy consumption and over 60 billion kilogrammes of electronic waste annually. A recent ITU and World Benchmarking Alliance report reveals that while leading firms invest heavily in renewable energy, their soaring energy needs—driven by massive data centres and #AI —keep pushing up greenhouse gas emissions. Key findings include: 🌱 Energy-related emissions vs. Renewables: European companies lead in sourcing 100% renewable electricity, while East Asia and the U.S. often rely on polluting sources. 🌱 AI impact: Cloud providers report a 62% increase in GHG emissions since 2020. 🌱 Scope 3 emissions: Many companies overlook emissions across the value chain (Scope 3), which are six times larger than operational (Scope 1 & 2) emissions.   To address these challenges, the #GreenDigitalAction initiative calls for tech companies to set clear targets for emission reductions and track their progress.
