Continuing our #womeninconstruction focus this week, we spoke to Alison Campbell, our Head of Delivery, as she offers her unique perspectives and provides valuable advice for those navigating a career path in construction. "Being in construction, a male-dominated field, I feel a real sense of purpose working with Venesky-Brown," Alison shares. "Here, it's about changing the narrative and empowering women to step into and up within the industry. I truly believe that the infusion of women brings new ideas, creativity, and sharper decision-making to our projects." Alison's educational journey and varied role experience have been the bedrock of her career. "What's really paved the way for me is the diversity of roles I've embraced. There's something incredibly rewarding about managing and supporting teams, watching individuals grow and projects flourish." Tackling the misconceptions about women in the field, Alison acknowledges there's more work to be done. "While it's true that the industry hasn't always been as inclusive, and certain stereotypes have persisted, there's a tide of change. We're now seeing more women involved, their opinions valued, and their careers ascending to new heights. This progress is vital, but we must continue to chip away at those barriers to pave a smoother road for the women who will follow." Navigating through the construction landscape, Alison reflects on the changing tides for women in the industry. "Once upon a time, women in construction were a rarity, and their input wasn't given the weight it deserved. Now, we're witnessing a welcome shift, with more women not just joining the ranks but also climbing to top-level positions." Alison's advice for women considering a career in construction is clear: “Own your voice. You have valid ideas and opinions, so make them heard. Did you know it’s WIC Week? It’s a national celebration of women in construction. I recently sat on a panel with incredible women covering various aspects of construction, including project management, architecture, finance, law, and brokerage. We all express gratitude to the women working on job sites, doing the same physical labor as men. Construction has traditionally been male-dominated, but we’re changing that narrative. Instead of “male-dominated,” let’s say “male-populated.” While there are more men in construction, it doesn’t imply they hold all leadership positions. Increasingly, women are taking on roles as field project managers, designers, architects, attorneys, engineers, and more, paving the way for others to enter the field with pride and respect. It’s remarkable that women are assuming these positions while still fulfilling caregiving responsibilities for children or elderly parents. A woman’s potential knows no bounds! I recently heard a woman say, “I started out breaking concrete and have now broken many glass ceilings,” referring literally to her job in construction. She’s now the president of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Central Florida. Michele Daugherty is incredible! Some other key points: - A new term: “voluntold” - when you’re volunteered to volunteer 😂 - Everyone should have a mentor, sponsor, coach, and friend. - Read the book “How Real Estate Developers Think” by Peter Hardy Brown (which, funny enough, I recently started reading thanks to my friend Charlotte Ustler who recommended it). - We need more men supporting women, so find yourself a professional male advocate. - Network and spread the message to the younger generation of women that they too can join the movement of more women in construction. Where did all the women go? As we encourage each other today to stay strong, inspire, and offer support, we also need to talk about the topic of glass ceilings—simply acknowledging those we have the power to shatter through our hard work and resilience, but also accepting those we simply cannot, and that it’s OK to move on. Browsing the image archives, I see numerous incredible women in the design industry who have not only climbed the corporate ladder, making their voices heard, but also many who have ventured out on their own, carving unique paths in design and architecture. But as we high-five each other we should also talk about the numbers… Despite women outperforming men academically since 2010 in the UK, and comprising 63% of university-level design students, their representation in leadership roles is a mere 17%, according to the Design Council’s 2022 Design Economy report. This discrepancy, while stark in the UK, likely reflects a broader, global issue, even though specific data for the Middle East is lacking. Women in Construction: A Growing Movement Around the world, women are making strides in an industry traditionally dominated by men—construction. Donna LaFata from A&D Equipment Inc, one of our longest-standing partners in North America, has been in the field for 20 years and talks about the importance of connections among women: “In an industry primarily run by men, we’ve learned how to handle our day-to-day operations. But when you come across women in the field, those connections become incredibly valuable. I hold onto them, and they’ve become essential relationships for me.” At Steelwrist, we believe it’s important to highlight initiatives and communities that contribute to continued development of the industry. Women-focused initiatives are on the rise, with groups like the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and events like the New England Women in Construction Conference, creating spaces for women to connect and grow. “When we developed this event in early 2023, our goal was to bring top-tier speakers and panelists to address issues impacting women in construction. We wanted to create a day focused solely on celebrating the incredible women in building and the trades. By investing in professional speakers and fostering a positive environment, we aim to help women connect, learn, and grow.” - Barbara Dimauro from Audience Development Strategies, LLC, organizers of the New England Women in Construction conference. As Donna looks forward to attending the conference, she’s optimistic about the growing support: “Last year’s event drew 50 people, and I’m sure this year will be even bigger.
