Paul Vick is lecturing on the above topic at The Gresham Society in the City of London with examples from the practice’s work on Th 23rd May 1500-1545 online. How badly is it all going in terms of climate change and development solutions? Nearly 40 years ago, the Brundtland report identified political and economic issues (rather than technological ones) as the greatest challenges affecting climate change - so has anything improved since then? The answer might lie further back in time when de Tocqueville in the early C19th maintained that power may be more distributed than we think. We have agency, individually and together, to affect change. In today’s world there are already design solutions and approaches that we can use to tackle climate change, and this is both empowering, and a form of power and profitability. Founder of Paul Vick architects, Paul Vick, tackles some shibboleths in a talk that looks at whether we are asking the right questions about profitability and value. They discuss some of the approaches they use to understand value and if they really are mutually exclusive; and how good design thinking can create value from the knowledge we have, and the knowledge we continue to gain. One such question the architect focussed on was ‘what is the value of creating a building that helps you live longer (for you, your users, clients)’ And ‘How do you create and innovate in a world which is often complex, uncertain, unaccounted and unaccountable?’ Where ‘art’ is the changing of perceptions and ‘design’ problem solving, good architecture addresses both. The talk illustrates with projects the practice has and is undertaking to create this profitability. There are questions it has going forward for us all. 23.05.24 1500-1545 online. Approx 20minute talk plus Q+A. Great to be part of the Urban Design Learning panel this morning to discuss - "Getting street projects built – Tips & secrets from the frontline" Key learning points: 🚲 Need to have a strategy & vision for how we want our streets to function - with strong engagement with stakeholders & communities - share the design story (vision & objectives) 🌈 Moving kerbs makes implementation trickier to deliver - but drainage is key to consider to avoid ponding - SuDS & raingardens have multiple benefits ♻ Maintenance consideration at design stages is vital with maintenance teams - for successful longevity 🧘♀️ Stay agile - flexibility of design & approach to delivery is important for success 💡 Collection of data on how streets are used 'before & after' is powerful to record 👄 Communication, communication, communication - it's always good to talk with the project team, community & stakeholders (and record keeping!) ⌚ Change is often hard to get used to - engagement with communities is key, then letting schemes settle down - complaints are highest at the start, then often people get used to the scheme, and realise there are significant benefits Always good to share knowledge, so we can all improve and learn for our next projects 👍 #everydayisaschoolday with Mark Frost Agnieszka Jezierska Joel Cockhill Sabeel Khan Simi Shah Jason Suffiad

Member Spotlight: Tang Yang Principal, GSBS Architects Time is valuable. Why AIA? I’ve been involved with the AIA in multiple capacities over the years. In fact, I was part of the committee that published the first issue of the Reflexion newsletter in 2013. As architects, we have a hand in shaping the built environment through every project we work on and that’s a big responsibility. Whether we realize it or not, AIA supports every architect in fulfilling this big responsibility through outreach, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and much more. If you give some of your time to be involved, I think you will quickly find that you are getting much more in return. Favorite Utah space: There are so many great spaces in Utah, but my favorite space is Little Cottonwood Canyon. It has something great to offer at any time of the year, skiing, biking, hiking, and so many other experiences. It’s where I spend free time with my family and it’s also the location of my most memorable architectural project. Favorite book: The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov are the books I would recommend if anyone were looking for a great science fiction journey. Mantra: “Enjoy the journey as much as the destination.”
