🍎 A New York Serendipity - Guttman Community College CUNY 🏛️ Hidden in plain sight - I bumped into this gem on my morning walk. Unfortunately, it was closed for the holiday, but the charm and promise it held from the outside piqued my curiosity instantly. A few things I learned and believe are worth celebrating (and I can't wait to explore them more on my next visit): 1️⃣ Beyond Books: GCC is redefining learning and becoming a testament to education evolving with the times. 🚀📚 2️⃣ Community at its Core: GCC is all about connections and entwined with the NYC heartbeat. 🤝🌇 3️⃣ Diversity as the Foundation: GCC is preparing changemakers for the world as it is, not just graduates. 🌍💡 4️⃣. Green Today, Greener Tomorrow: Sustainability isn’t a buzzword at GCC; it's a responsibility. Gutman’s green initiatives are lessons in action, not just intention. 🌿🌏 5️⃣. A Cultural Mosaic: Walk into GCC, walk into the world. A microcosm of cultures, each adding to a symphony of perspectives. 🎶🌐 Can't wait to go back! In a recent article in The Conversation, C4IE members Associate Professor Jenna Gillett-Swan, Associate Professor Jill Willis, and colleague, Dr Kristy Volz, explore how vertical schools are transforming educational spaces in Australia. These innovative schools, located in cities like Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, optimise urban spaces and revitalise central business districts. As Australian cities grow in density, many building types – including schools – need to adapt to a vertical world. Vertical schools make the most of compact sites, accommodating spatial needs across one or two connected buildings. By providing engaging learning environments and integrating with local institutions, vertical schools foster a sense of connection to the city. Their design, involving student input, prioritises safety and thoughtful infrastructure, enhancing educational experiences while contributing to economic development and inclusive city planning. 🌍 #WRLDCTY | Session of the Day: Uncertainty is a Feature, Not a Bug | Daria (Dasha) Krivonos Check out the session for free until Oct. 31: https://lnkd.in/e-3YjGyd Dasha Krivonos’ keynote explored the critical role of uncertainty in urban planning. Rather than succumbing to inaction, she encouraged leaders to embrace uncertain times as moments ripe for transformative action. Krivonos urged the audience to challenge entrenched assumptions about the future and take calculated risks that could lead to groundbreaking urban solutions. “Failure of imagination is a crisis,” she warned, highlighting the importance of rethinking the future in a way that aligns with the dynamic, interconnected world of the 21st century. #urbanplanning #urbansolutions #futurethinking #futureplanning #economicdevelopment #sustainability #embraceuncertainty

Thanks to Dr Bahareh Kaveh for nominating me, I had the pleasure of attending the quarterly Nottingham Women In Construction lunch, held at the Spotlight Bar, as a Nottingham Trent University graduate. The event featured an inspiring mentoring speech by Maria Coulter BEM MRICS, which I’ve summarized below: 1. Personal Development: Reflect on who you truly are and what you genuinely want. Identify your core values—the things that matter most to you. If you can't live by them, ask yourself why. Track how you spend your time, and if what you do makes you happy, that’s likely tied to your core values. 2. Vision for the Future: Think about where you want to be, even in the next 12 months. Do you need to do something differently to get there? 3. Have a Plan: Know what’s important to you and where you want to go. Break down your actions into manageable steps to reach your goals. 4. Back Yourself: Don’t let fear hold you back. Go after what you truly want, because you have nothing to lose. 5. Mentorship and Support: Support is essential for success. The encouragement from those who believed in my potential, even when it wasn’t apparent, has been invaluable. I also had the pleasure of meeting Carrie Booth at this event, who was incredibly kind and supportive. I would also like to thank Chris Jones, Laura Sowter (nee Smith), and Jessica Hird for facilitating my presence at this event! #WomenInConstruction #CivilEngineering #Mentorship #ProfessionalDevelopment #CareerGrowth #Networking

Thank you to Cam Good and KEY Marketing for hosting us U40 members at the Leadership Breakfast in your beautiful space! Thank you also to Urban Development Institute for organizing this event. It was wonderful to meet like minded RE professionals at this morning's intimate venue, and always great to hear and learn about Cam's career journey. My personal takeaways: - Figure out what you want to do and really evaluate if you are willing to do what it takes to get there. - Disruption and innovation has its limits, be self aware of where it crosses the line. - Believe in yourself and what you stand for and continue with conviction. People may not understand at first what it is you are trying to achieve but over time and hard work, the results will speak for themselves.
I attended the Urban Development Institute School of Development years ago. I made friends I still have to this day and it gave me a fundamental understanding of the whole industry which has paid huge dividends over the years. Last month... I had the opportunity to share my experience alongside an amazing panel of speakers including Geoff Matthews of Strand Development Limited, Blaire Chisholm of Pooni Group, Matthew Walton of Anthem Properties Group Ltd. and Dan Chyzowski, Jason Short, and Matteo Lanci of ETRO Construction to walk through the ABC's of Real Estate Development alongside our course facilitator Michael von Hausen. This morning... I had the pleasure of meeting UDI's U40 members at KEY Marketing's head office for more sharing. 100% of registrants showed up and I was particularly impressed by those who stuck around after to learn more. The future is bright for Alison Cowling, Samson Tam, Leanne Washuta, Alanna Cation, Jeff Fong, Kevin Starke, Kassy Crocker, Nora Throness, Sienna Wheeler (Richardson-Isberg), Brandon Pao, Champston Le, Cassidy Le Troy, Nicholas Campbell and Grace Martin. Thanks to Verna Yu and the rest of the UDI team for facilitating so much learning in our industry.

It was a pleasure, as always, to join friends (old and new), industry peers, and a broad range of professionals for an event hosted by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. The convening consisted of a presentation and illuminating panel discussion, "Shaping the Future of Downtown: Catalysts to Ensure Success," both addressing Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation's recent research on economic disruption in Downtown Boston. As one of the region's leaders in building construction, civil and utility infrastructure construction, and general contracting, particularly for projects with public or commercial outcomes, it's imperative that BOND Brothers, Inc. keep our finger on the pulse of these ongoing issues and their implications. While Massachusetts, and specifically Boston, has experienced tremendous growth over the first part of this century, COVID fundamentally changed how people work and where people want to live and what worked for us for the first twenty years will not work for us for the next twenty years. Boston is not the only city that is facing this reality but we have to use this inflection point to reinvent ourselves by leveraging our strengths in education, health care and life sciences and finding new ways to ensure Boston and Massachusetts are affordable and family-friendly destinations for residents and tourists alike. The Mass Taxpayers Foundation's full report, which I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with, is here: https://lnkd.in/d3qxq8_H and you can watch the presentation here: https://lnkd.in/dWeRFVA4
