A mentor is like a guiding star in your personal or professional journey, offering invaluable insights, advice, and support. Here's a glimpse of their value:
Wisdom and Experience: Mentors typically have a wealth of experience in their field. They've encountered various situations, learned from successes and failures, and can share practical knowledge that you might not find in books.
Networking: They often have extensive networks and can introduce you to valuable contacts, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be challenging to access.
Perspective and Feedback: A mentor can offer an outsider's perspective on your decisions, behaviors, and ideas. Honest feedback is incredibly valuable for personal growth and development.
Emotional Support and Encouragement: Sometimes, the support and encouragement from a mentor can be crucial during tough times. They can provide motivation and guidance, helping you navigate through obstacles and challenges.
Skill Development: Mentors can help you identify and develop specific skills necessary for your goals. Their guidance can fast-track your learning process.
Accountability: Having someone to be accountable to can be a powerful motivator. Mentors often act as a source of accountability, ensuring you stay on track with your goals and commitments.
Confidence Boost: Knowing that someone experienced believes in your abilities can significantly boost your confidence. This belief can be a catalyst for pushing your boundaries and aiming for higher goals.

January is National Mentoring Month, a time to recognize those who shaped who we are today and an opportunity to help the next generation develop as people and professionals. In partnership with United Way of South Hampton Roads, PRA Group launched the Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program, during which children at Thurgood Marshall Elementary are paired with a local professional who provides mentorship and consistent emotional support throughout their school year. Watch to see how these lunch break touch points make a positive difference—not only in the students' lives, but also in those of their mentors.
