So… this brilliant duo reckon that increasing attendance is the main issue with education… and it is; we have a shameful rate of attendance in NZ - with less than 50% of our kids attending school regularly. Tell me, Mr Luxon and Mr Seymour, how will introducing a traffic light system and gathering more attendance data be effective ways to reach your government’s goal of 80% of students attending school by 2030?? Surely we need to build up more trust in our communities and educate parents on the importance of education. After yesterday’s “Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand" findings; it shows an alarming number of New Zealanders don’t trust our news. (“This has again fallen significantly - from 42% in 2023 to 33% in 2024 😔. In fact we are one of the least trusting countries in the world.”) So, how do we improve these statistics?? How do we start trusting the news, trusting the government, and trusting our education system so we can collectively solve this problem of poor school attendance???🤷🏻♀️😅

The Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) has officially been signed into law by President Biden, representing a pivotal moment for student safety and well-being. This bipartisan legislation, which amends the Clery Act, introduces groundbreaking measures to increase transparency, accountability, and prevention of hazing across higher education institutions. SCHA reflects the collective efforts of families, survivors, researchers, and organizations, as well as the commitment of lawmakers who championed this issue. Bipartisan support from Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Representatives Lucy McBath (D-GA) and Jeff Duncan (R-SC) ensured the bill’s success. This historic legislation represents a shared commitment to learning from past tragedies and creating safer environments for future generations. Its passage is a powerful reminder that meaningful change is possible when we come together to address the challenges facing our communities. Today, we celebrate a significant step toward a future where every student can thrive in a safe and supportive campus environment. The Stop Campus Hazing Act stands as a beacon of progress, accountability, and hope. Inspection needs to be ‘high stakes’..?! I agree that a school carrying out its statutory duty is high stakes. The high stakes we want diminished though, are the risk of impact on school leaders well-being and lives based on the whims of an individual on a specific 2 days, the anxiety in the lead up to inspection and the worry over unfairness in the system.
