Gleðilegan þjóðhátíðardag! 🎉 Today we celebrate the National Day of Iceland! 🎉 The National Day is celebrated annually on 17 June. It is a special holiday that commemorates the foundation of the Republic of Iceland in 1944 when the country became a sovereign republic. The day also marks the end of Iceland's connections to the Kingdom of Denmark. The day, 17 June, was chosen as it is the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson who fought for Iceland’s independence. The day is celebrated with parades and public speeches all over the country! Iceland, with its spectacular landscapes, is a source of inspiration for all who visit our beautiful country. From majestic glaciers and active volcanoes to stunning waterfalls and soothing hot springs, the natural beauty is truly remarkable. But Iceland isn't just about nature, it's also about incredible people. Icelanders are known for their strong, innovative, and artistic spirit, and their unwavering commitment to equality and democracy. The Icelandic term "þetta reddast" translates to "it will work out" or "it will be fine." It reflects a mindset of optimism and resilience, embodying the Icelandic spirit of facing challenges with the belief that, despite difficulties, things will ultimately turn out okay. This phrase is often used to reassure and encourage a positive outlook, even in uncertain situations. The accompanying photo features the Icelandic flag near a small, traditional turf farmhouse built for Icelandic elves. These mythical beings, known as "huldufólk" (hidden people), are believed in Icelandic folklore to inhabit rocks and hills. Typically invisible and residing in a parallel world, huldufólk occasionally interact with humans. Belief in huldufólk is deeply rooted in Icelandic culture, influencing everything from literature to construction projects, where care is often taken not to disturb their supposed dwellings. To all Icelanders (and elves), whether you are at home or abroad, we wish you a day filled with joy, pride, and memorable moments!

Can anyone spot one other “gringo” in the crowd with me?? People often ask me why I choose to live in a so called “third-world country”, in one of the worlds Top 10 most dangerous cities, where only 1% of the population speak English… ...and my answer is simple; Perspective & positivity Living here amidst the vibrant energy of the welcoming and warm Brazilian people in this weeks celebrations of Carnaval, has taught me lessons no classroom or boardroom ever could. It's about embracing diversity, understanding resilience, and the sheer joy found in communities coming together, even against the odds. This city, with its challenges, is also a place of untold beauty, unwavering spirit, and incredible warmth - most of it not spoken in my native tongue, but felt deeply in every beat of the music, every smile and caiphirinha shared during these festivities. It's a reminder to me that life's richest experiences often come from the most unexpected places. So, why do I choose to stay? Because every day, this 'third world' city teaches me something new about the world, about humanity, about life and about myself. And that, to me, is worth more than all the ‘riches’ I could find anywhere in the so-called 'first world'. WHY DOES ITALY CLOSE FOR AUGUST? How does the entire country of Italy and most of Europe shut down in August? It is a shock to many foreign Customers when they hear that offices and businesses are closed entirely for this extended period. However, this tradition, at least in Italy, stems back to Roman times. The Ferragosto Holiday stems back to a celebration of the festival of Emperor Augustus. The holiday was initially a day of rest for all the field workers after weeks of hard work on the farms. In the Renaissance period, this holiday was moved to align with the Assumption of Mary on August 15th. History lesson aside, there is also a very practical aspect to consider, where we live and work the temperatures in July and August reach 35-37 C° with a very high humidity rate that raises the perceived temperature, a temperature that is compounded by the temperature of the machinery in production, all for a less than optimal working condition. Therefore, between the traditions that reign strong in Italy and the boiling condition we are in, we would like to inform you that BDL's summer vacation will start from August 5 to 23. Happy National Day of Sweden! 🎉 It’s been almost five years since I moved to Sweden from Italy, and Sweden has changed me a ton! Here are 6 personality traits that Sweden has cultivated in me: 1-Increased Punctuality: I have become more organized and punctual since I moved to Sweden and now expect the same from others around me. 2-Becoming a Morning Person: I was never a morning person, and it was always an issue for me to wake up before 8. I used to avoid breakfast dates or early hikes. Now, I look forward to starting my day early and finishing sooner. 3-Appreciation for Nature: I used to take nature for granted, thinking it was beautiful everywhere and would last forever. Now, I am more careful about what I buy, eat, and how I behave towards the environment around me. 4-Better Team Player: I believe being a team player is a matter of education. I grew up in a culture that did not emphasize teamwork. I learned it the hard way, and though I’m still not perfect, I’m proud of this skill. 5-Trust in Bureaucracy: Most of the time, people work efficiently in Swedish organizations and institutions compared to where I lived before. Although bureaucracy is not my favorite and it can take longer to get things done here, the level of automation in Sweden is impressive. I'm sure my application will be taken care of in Swedish organisations effectively. 6-Increased Patience: I used to be in a rush and stressed about everything, always wanting to reach the end point quickly, as if being chased. However, people here enjoy their 30-minute fika with all their body cells, even when they have a lot on their desks. I still find it annoying, but it helps me realize that patience is a virtue. There are, of course, things I never want to be influenced by from Swedish culture. But it’s the positive aspects that impress me, and those are what I will focus on. Today I baked this blueberry lemon cake for my family to celebrate this day. The recipe said it will take 1.5 hours but it was 4! 😂
