Have you ever thought about how privilege shows up in your own community? Recently, I had an insightful conversation with a friend about privilege, which opened up a discussion on the misconceptions surrounding power and privilege. These misconceptions not only reflect our attitudes but also highlight layers of privilege that often go unnoticed. In this carousel, I’ve only highlighted a few examples, but there are so many more to explore. You’ll find: - Insights into how body size, economic status, and mental health reflect different forms of privilege. - Real-world misconceptions and the facts behind them. - A deeper look into how these factors shape our experiences and opportunities. Feel free to add your own thoughts, examples, or experiences. Let’s keep this conversation going—how do you see privilege impacting your community or daily interactions? 𝐑𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 By: Jaime Elder To invest in the promise and potential of our children is to invest in our future. That investment is more crucial than ever according to reports that youth are experiencing unprecedented levels of hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. While the COVID-19 pandemic era was a catalyst for the youth mental health crisis, the American Psychological Association stated that in the decade leading up to 2020, depression and suicidal thoughts and ideation increased by about 40% among young people. Locally, the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey echoed national findings and Palm Beach County youth self-reported that they were struggling with interpersonal relationships, feeling safe at school, and general feelings of hopelessness. According to youth surveyed in Mission Australia’s Youth Survey last year, the three biggest challenges identified were school challenges (49%), mental health challenges (24%), and relationship challenges (21%). A common theme across all challenges appeared to be that our young people don't always feel comfortable seeking help or support and, they're unsure how to communicate with parents, teachers or friends about their situation. Taking the time to be there for our youth, asking the right questions and simply listening can help. #afairgofortasmanianyouth #communityledchange #youthchallenges #youthsurvey #askingtherightquestions #listening #beingthere #tassieyouth #tasmanianyouth

🤔How often do you reflect on your 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘀?🤔 It is not bad to have privileges, but it is important to 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 them or be aware of them in the context of co-existing with others. But why must you be aware of our privileges in the context of other people? Awareness is important because it is a key to offering anyone an 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 and 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 space. And why would anyone want to provide such space? The very simple answer is because it makes you a 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 & you would also like to receive such space. This would only get reciprocated, once we start offering it to others. Privileges can exist in various ways for instance socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, access to education, body shape & size, race, etc. As a mental health organization, understanding clients’ privileges & helping them know their privileges helps therapists support them while navigating through challenges. Recognizing these privileges is a key to providing empathetic & effective care. As they significantly shape an individual’s experiences in life. Awareness of these factors fosters a more 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 and 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 therapeutic environment. Let us start the conversation around privilege. Let us know what you think about privilege in the comments below. 💬⬇️ #privilege #reflect #empathetic #inclusive #intersectionality #mentalhealth #safespace #safestories
