The UK’s housing crisis is not just about homes; it’s about community, connection, and belonging. The New York Times article highlights the urgent need for new towns that prioritise both affordable housing and social infrastructure. At the Belonging Forum, we understand that homes are more than just physical spaces—they’re one of the foundations of our sense of belonging. As we explore solutions to the housing crisis, let’s ensure we’re building communities that foster connection, well-being, and inclusion for everyone. Then this paper is for you! I spent the last bit of the Partnership for the Bay's Future Fellowship working with Jasmine Tarkoff to compile our lessons learned on regulating affordable housing on faith-owned land and working with faith-based organizations. We hope this resource helps others build, fund, and otherwise support cottage communities on faith-owned land #affordablehousing #middlehousing
We’re thrilled to share our latest insights into sustainable affordable housing solutions with the release of our new white paper! Explore the comprehensive look into the policy developed by the Policy Fund team in Antioch that leverages undeveloped faith-owned land to establish supportive cottage communities. This report builds on our earlier release of the Antioch team’s roadmap for a collaborative approach to expanding affordable housing through robust community engagement and innovative policy development. These reports demonstrate how developing housing solutions can be responsive to the needs of its communities. Discover the strategies are not only effective in addressing local challenges but are also designed to be scalable and adaptable to other cities looking to tackle similar issues. https://lnkd.in/gYtPZ7y7 Hope Solutions City of Antioch #HousingEquity #AffordableHousing #BayAreaHousing

Nationwide serving its community! 💙 The Weingart Towers, a 19-story, 278-unit permanent supportive housing development in Skid Row, Los Angeles, celebrated its grand opening June 19, 2024. Here are the key points: Purpose and Hope: The project aims to improve and transform Skid Row, which has been the epicenter of the region’s homelessness crisis. Elected officials and homeless services providers expressed hope that this initiative will make a positive impact. Amenities: Weingart Tower I features amenities such as a cafe, a club room, a gym, music and art rooms, a computer lab, dog runs, terraces with community gardens, and common balcony areas. It provides high-quality apartment living for homeless individuals. Cost: The first tower cost an estimated $165 million, with approximately $595,000 per residential unit. Funding came from Proposition HHH, a $1.2 billion bond measure approved by Los Angeles voters in 2016 to support affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness. This project represents an important step toward providing dignified housing and support services for those in need.
Nearly 300 people in LA's Central City East neighborhood, also known as Skid Row, now have a place to call home with the opening of Weingart Tower 1A! This 19-story building offers housing and health and wellness services, funded partly by Nationwide’s Affordable Housing Tax Credit program.

This is a real issue. Unfortunately, residents rarely show up to public meetings in support of any type of new development. Higher density and commercial zone changes being the most contested. This is also especially true, (but not exclusive) to areas with higher retirement community populations, like those in Southern Utah. The problem is that the same demographics (retired equity buyers and young families) doing most of the complaining, are both simultaneously increasing demand on services (retirees) and not participating (IRL) in the conversation and decision process (young families). We end up with a labor crisis exacerbated by an affordable/attainable housing crisis. When there are no advocates of change at public meeting, how could NYMBYism not be an influence on elected officials or who runs for public office? A good start? Get educated, write in, and show up. There are competing factors that communities must carefully balance and elected officials need to hear from more people than just those who feel like they are negatively impacted.
The argument of NIMBYism (not in my backyard) usually falls apart once self-selection of the growth is introduced . . . “I’m okay with growth if it’s MY FAMILY moving in, or MY FRIENDS…” That’s not CITY planning, that’s FAMILY planning. And the next time you argue for not wanting to bring affordable housing to your area, consider where your children or grandchildren will live—I doubt they’ll start life out with the same economic means as you. But I guess “those people” couldn’t possibly be YOUR children... #realestate #growth #development #housing #housingaffordability #housingcrisis #housingforall

"Part of the craziness of the current system is that there is no local mooring for housing prices. There is no entry-level product providing an anchor to upwardly accelerating home prices.. We have to move beyond the narrow, almost futile task of making affordable housing and start working on the broader and more meaningful effort of making housing affordable." #housing #housingcrisis #housingsolutions

"Our model is a limited-equity cooperative model, which means families will be building some wealth as they are living in the cooperative. Building wealth is something that doesn't exist in much affordable rental housing because that hasn't been the model. But our approach is also about spreading out the risk, collectivizing as much of it as we can, so that the individual impact is lessened from individual families. Ours is also a project about remembering ancestral ways of doing things more collectively, more communal." Read more about the BLUU x UHW Cooperative Housing Initiative ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/giMpcy8y
