Is your retail media or DOOH network an ostrich? Do you hide your head in the sand (fake news about the valiant ostrich per the Cleveland Zoo) and pretend only "impressions" matter? I've learned over long experience that ad buyers care about attention which is measured by performance. At PRN and STRATACACHE, we focus on creating digital retail shopper experiences that can be monetized because they are accretive to the shopper's in-store path to purchase. Not an ad monetized screen placed in athwart the shopper's path to purchase. The result is value-added attention and performance. If you are not focusing on attention you won't drive performance. Yesterday I had the chance of catching up with Dom Perkins, one of the "greats of media" who moved into ad tech. In the case of Dom, closely tied to retail media. Besides the pleasure to reconnect, our conversation touched a couple of very important subjects in the relationship between retail / e-commerce and traditional media: - How to make sure the user is engaging with the retailer (including purchasing), starting from an ad, while not moving away from the media owner's environment? - How to build a quality media environment for retail media audience extensions? Ad testing data from System1, The Creative Effectiveness Platform, helped determine what ads ranked highest across different categories, from brand building to fan favorite. System1 used audience reaction to test ads against “four Cs”: characters, celebrities, cultural references and comedy. By registering consumers' emotional responses second-by-second throughout an ad, System1's Test Your Ad scores long-term brand building (1.0 - 5.9 Stars) and short-term sales potential (Spike Rating based on emotional intensity and strength of branding). Behavioral research company Veylinx found that Super Bowl Sunday ads fuel a 6.4% increase in demand among viewers versus traditional primetime media buys. This year's ads averaged 2.7-Stars, down from 2023's 2.9-Star average but above the 2.3-Star average for all US ads. The top ads for brand effectiveness were: Michelob ULTRA, “Superior Beach”, Reese's, “Yes!”, Hellmann's, “Mayo Cat”, T-Mobile, “That T-Mobile Home Internet Feeling” and Lindt, “Life is a Ball”. Love this…the long-tail of RMNs is very long and the audiences get smaller very rapidly. However the complexity of buying, managing this long tail is hard and a big ROAS on a tiny audience may not be worth it. I do applaud theses new networks (like Chase and #UBER) as a way to deliver a different segments outside the retail/shopper box.
