What is an Ethical Leader? I describe ethical leadership as the critical appropriation and embodiment of moral traditions that have shaped the character and shared meanings of a people (an ethos). In fact, ethical leadership does not emerge from a historical vacuum but from the lifeworlds of particular traditions and speaks authoritatively and acts responsibly with the aim of serving the collective good. Ethical leaders, therefore, are those whose characters have been shaped by the wisdom, habits, and practices of particular traditions—often more than one—yet they tend to be identified with a specific cultural ethos and narrative. Finally, ethical leadership asks the question of values in reference to ultimate concern. Nicole Robinson is an ethical leader.

January 16th, National Day of Racial Healing: Launched in 2017, it is an opportunity to bring ALL people together in their common humanity and inspire collective action to create a more just and equitable world. The National Day of Racial Healing is a time to reflect on our shared values and create a collaborative blueprint for #HowWeHeal from the trauma of racism. To do so, we must feel safe enough to name our wounds and share the experiences that have harmed us, while being brave enough to envision and work toward the future we want. Visualizing that new future is a critical but often overlooked part of racial healing. BBBSSEM as part of our JEDI focus (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) daily advocates for and supports our Bigs, Littles, Families and Communities through their racial healing journeys. With specific programs, training, workshops and events, BBBSSEM fights for justice, the creation of equity, the understanding of diversity, and a commitment to inclusion.

What is a Courageous Conversation? 🗣 Daniel Robinson, Director of Transitional Programs and part of our DEI initiatives at MCHS, describes it as "intentionally giving space to communicate about complex issues of social justice, race, and privilege among co-workers." These conversations often require being bold and open to sharing one's own experiences, with a willingness to hear about the experiences of others, too. "These discussions benefit everyone within our agency", explains Robinson. We recognize that everyone is unique and encourage that they always be seen and heard. While these conversations can sometimes be challenging, they are worth it, because they help to create a sense of value and belonging in our workplace. Celebrating 50 years of services, Children's Services of Roxbury, Inc. (CSR) is one of Massachusetts' largest Black-run nonprofit organizations. Its leadership, staff, and board members are predominantly Black, which is an important representation of black excellence and empowerment in the Greater Boston community. By providing essential services and support to children and families, particularly those from underserved communities, CSR is actively addressing the systemic disparities and challenges. This month, CSR will host the ROXTalks series of community conversations on "Forging One Boston" to transform the social and economic health of communities of color across the Commonwealth and break the cycle of systemic racism for future generations. During this episode, CSR's President & CEO, Sandra McCroom, will lead the conversation with Michael Curry, Esq. and Kevin M. Brighton's anti-racism protest gathering yesterday showed many of us the way. The same can be said for the people of Walthamstow. Reflecting on recent events in England, it was a concern to delve too deeply into the political as the main spokesperson for Candy Healthcare. However, we are built on inclusion and community, something which reflects not only in passive circumstance (our nursing demographic as an example) but in the active business decisions we take against these values of equal opportunity, true service and uplifting the communities we serve. Part of that responsibility is to recognise that by saying nothing, you become the bystander. "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends" Martin Luther King We are here especially for our workforce, many of whom are "accustomed" to the ongoing micro-aggressions of racism and bigotry still prevalent in our society, which have now boiled over into direct, physical threat from the far right. Supportive conversations, sharing advice and local or national support networks for them is only the beginning for what we intend to do as a business, ongoing. Nick Clegg, Meta's President of Global Affairs, recently stated categorically that there was no evidence the rise in social media had anything more than a correlative resemblance to the increase in racism (particularly Islamophobia) and polarisation across our society. I wonder if he is still willing to stand by these words? We stand by the actions of our government and Wes Streeting's recent directive for our NHS staff not to treat patients who demonstrate racist attitudes towards them. We recognise the positive and necessary impact of immigration on our economy, public services and the enrichment of our communities. Let's not pass the buck of overt racism onto "concerns over immigration". Let's actually call this out as the politically motivated construct it is.
