Credit Risk Manager | ETF Portfolio Management | Investment & Fund Analytics | Python, SQL, Bloomberg | I help investment firms 2x their AUM in 10 months
Great catching up with Kieran Mulligan, Chief Risk Officer of Secured Lending for Barclays UK, asking about his career. 1️⃣How do you navigate when 2 of your senior executives disagree on something? First, we need to understand the ‘why’ of the problem. The purpose is key to deciding the action. Then we consider the long-term significance about the potential route forward. The data can often signal whether the item is material, and how to progress a problem. Lastly, and most important, is the relationship between the leaders and you. Trust must be built over time between the decision makers so we can navigate through issues without harming the relationship. 2️⃣How did you differentiate yourself early in your career? I didn’t have a big plan when I started my career. Simple things like working hard, asking for help, and putting yourself forward for new projects outside your comfort zone. The key is enjoying the work. If you don’t enjoy it, you’ll be miserable everyday. If you enjoy it, you’ll take pride in the work you present. 3️⃣What do you do to manage the stress of your responsibilities? Learn the quality of your team early. The better your team and your development of them, the more you can delegate effectively. *view from the London office over Canary Wharf*

“Let’s explore the art of the possible”……I’ve heard these words time and time again over my career and they have been at the foundation of how we’ve been serving the business community at Hillcrest Bank. To me this means we show up in a meaningful and collaborative way with our clients and focus on the execution of their unique and specific goals and objectives. “How can we build the box around you” versus the traditional view of fitting you in our box. Thats how we serve clients. Once a year we lock the team (not literally, as you can see the door is open😂😂) in a room and discuss this Art around our clients and prospective clients. This is how we bring “value creation” to life in a team environment. This is how we pull off the coordinated execution of whatever we are working on for you at Hillcrest Bank. This is how we serve YOU! While it’s a long process to prepare, I’m always inspired afterwards by the ideas we discuss and how we can impact and change lives for our clients. If your not a client and want to see what this level of focus means for your banking relationship and for your business, I hope you consider reaching out to any of us on the team (names below). If you are already a client, THANK YOU for the opportunity to serve you and we look forward to our continued relationship in exploring “the art of the possible”. I’ve spent the past 4 days meeting with 20 of the most relevant firms in US Credit (with Robert Slater, Jim Finn, Justin Colt & Peter Boozan), across sell-side and buy-side, and wanted to share some common themes coming through: 1. Solid start to the year: morale seems high in US credit and most businesses had a great 1Q. There are many opportunities in credit today, a healthy debate about the rate outlook is driving diverging views about the market, and the expectation is that deal flow will remain strong in 2Q. 2. Hiring constraints remain a challenge: on both the buy-side & sell-side - everyone is looking for that Credit Analyst with 5-10 years experience in their late 20s / early 30s, but there’s not much supply. 3. This means searches are long, arduous and expensive, and there’s not a sense that this will get any easier going forward with smaller investment banking analyst pools and more competition for young talent outside of traditional finance. All of this is leading to a growing demand for specialist technology to help address the gap between an outsized opportunity set and constrained resources. Tech enables investment teams to cover more of the market and focus on higher value work, ultimately providing optionality for businesses looking to change but unable to make a wholesale transition overnight. Our conversations with prospective clients also confirmed that “credit data” is quickly emerging as a defined product category in the US much like it has in recent years in Europe. Everyone is looking for an edge and how best to maximize their return on time spent per situation. Thanks to all our great clients in the US – we’re really looking forward to being back here soon! The private credit sector is booming, with a busy quarter for hiring managers. Our data (thanks to Jacob Chilvers) is tracking 122 moves in the second quarter alone, bringing the year-to-date total to 257! 📈 Direct lending continues to be the busiest area, showcasing its key role in the industry. Meanwhile, specialty finance is seeing a notable uptick, showing diverse opportunities and growing interest in niche markets. These trends highlight the dynamic nature of the private credit space and the demand for top talent.

Yesterday, was my 5 year Anniversary with Bank of the West! I am grateful to Kenneth Hernandez, Hugh Conners, and Judi Prejean for hiring me! My goal at that time, was to stabilize my career and build a portfolio with my best/favorite clients. I can honestly and humbly say, that I have accomplished that goal. I look forward to work every day because I get to support some really great people! I still have some really great prospects out there (that know who they are) that need to move over! The deal below is another example, where competition was minimal, because of deal factors. I take pride in getting deals done that others can't. It should be noted, that we do special things for our clients. Clients that understand the benefits of a primary banking relationship. I feel very blessed when I reflect on the past 5 years, because, - I have been mentored and mentored others - I have made friendships with so many partners that I admire - and I manage a group of clients that refer me to their friends and express their gratitude for what I do for their business on a consistent basis. Friendly reminder, I can be contacted at 909-536-6974 or joshua.hewett@bmo.com. #commercialbanking #communitybanking #relationshipmanager #relationshipsmatter #relationshipbanking #partnerships #colleagues #contributors #customerexperience #customerfeedback #customerservice #referralpartners #referrals #networking #succeedingtogether #makeadifference #bmogrowthegood #bmo #bankofthewest #nextchapter
