This is an interesting initiative that has been a long time coming. Footballers on retirement have invaluable knowledge and experience that should not be lost to the game. There is another major opportunity in bringing that experience from football to marry up with the developing focus on neuroscience. Currently, the relationship is closer to the needs of scientific research rather than the immediate practical use for the demands of professional football. There is enough existing research, already completed and published, to indicate the benefits of Mentored Brain Training can deliver for elite football. In particular, improved performance and building mental strength and resilience can be conveniently achieved. Football should be taking a more significant lead here to ensure its needs are met. There will come a time when full time jobs will be created in every club and it will be more beneficial for the game if footballers can take on the role. It could be easier for ex players to learn about the fundamentals of brain training than scientists attempting to understand the world of elite football.
