Knowles Teacher Initiative awards leadership grants to Teaching Fellows who are engaged in activities that will positively impact STEM education beyond their own classrooms. Kevin and his colleagues attended the NSTA conference in March and will spend the next few months exploring the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Together they will develop shared resources to better engage their students in "doing" science and engineering in each of their courses. What does it look like to support teachers in doing this complex work? Provide teachers funding to attend professional conferences and substitute coverage so they have the time to do this important work. Small financial investments can spark monumental change. #KnowlesLovesTeachers #TeacherAppreciation #TeacherLeadership

"Best way to predict future is to invent it" - this is main idea of engaging conversation with Dale P. Johnson at our #InnovativeUniversities webinar. I am glad that we started the new season of the webinar with the discussion of one of the most interesting universities Arizona State University. Thanks Dara Melnyk for moderation - the discussion gave us quite a few wonderful principles from ASU experience: "Innovation is not leadership business, it is a part of everybody's work", "Innovations starts when you stop to do what you are usually doing". And I strongly recommend watching or listening to a fascinating story about innovations implemented to solve a problem of 40% failure at Algebra course. Clear and wise example of problem-driven innovation.

It is not enough to be a technical expert. Last night was the first class for the CxO Forum spring semester class at the University of Cincinnati, where I had the pleasure of engaging with a group of 45 talented technology graduate students. Kicking off the session with a discussion on career success, I emphasized a crucial point: "It is not enough to be a technical expert if you aspire to progress into an IT leadership position." In preparation for the class, I reach back into articles and books on career success and leadership. Beginning the class with a powerful quote from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, which asserts that "85% of your financial success is due to your personality and ability to communicate," the class discussed the significance of attributes and activities that require little or no technical skill but are important to career success highlighting communication and networking. What I believe is meaningful for the students is weaving personal stories around nuggets of advice from leadership and career experts, connecting these insights to my own career journey. From successes and failures to pivotal moments and lessons learned, these narratives breathe life into the discussion. As the saying goes, "if I only knew then what I know now." The students are fueled by the curiosity and energy of youth, and we are off to a promising start. I'm eagerly anticipating the upcoming weeks, where we'll delve into more stories from other leaders in the IT community. I am grateful that the Cincinnati IT community has many leaders that are willing to invest some time in the next generation. Here's to those leaders who will join the class and help unlock the attributes of IT leadership beyond technical expertise! #Leadership #CareerSuccess #ITLeadership #CxOForum #PersonalDevelopment #universityofcincinnati #cincinnati #ohio #nextgeneration https://www.uc.edu/

The only thing shared governance does in higher ed is prevent change. As as former, tenured professor, I tried, repeatedly, to engage the faculty in my program to discuss the possible need for curriculum changes. Given the fact that our curriculum had not changed in 20 years, all I asked is if we might consider making some revisions. Unfortunately, one senior professor was able to successfully derail the opening to this discussion, over and over again. And so, for five years, when I was there, nothing changed. Two years after I left my program, the curriculum is still stagnant. And, students are still paying tens of thousands of dollars, each year, for the "privilege" of receiving a two-decade old education at an R1. Speak to truth and call this issue out for what it is: corruption.
Higher ed enthusiast and award winning author, public and land grant university champion, chief optimism officer, connector, collider, university senior leader.
“Shared governance is a system designed, in my view, to make sure that any changes are very slow and very incremental. Anytime you work toward consensus within a large, heterogeneous group, you going to probably end up taking a lot if time – and with an outcome that is least objectionable to the most people, which is antithetical to anything revolutionary or transformational.” -Brian Rosenberg, former president of Macalester College This is set against the backdrop of the many converging challenges facing higher ed. The need for transformational change in our nation’s colleges and universities has never been greater or more urgently needed... #highered #collegesanduniversities #leadership #faculty #governance #transformationalchange
