As corporate sustainability moves from targets and plans to action and outcomes, companies are being called on to align their political influence with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Engaging in climate advocacy not only allows businesses to strengthen their position on climate, but is also key to preventing the financial, physical, and systemic risks posed by a delayed economy-wide transition to net zero. Join us in two weeks for a webinar on ‘Developing an Advocacy Strategy’, as we kick off our four-part ‘Engaging in Corporate Climate Advocacy’ webinar series, kindly supported by Clyde & Co. NEW report on co-creating climate justice interventions between business and communities available for download: [https://lnkd.in/eats_-4W] Authored by BSR’s Lizzie Russler, Anine Bundgård, Melissa Do, and Eileen Gallagher, this issue brief explores the benefits and challenges of co-creation and offers guidance on how to implement potential climate justice interventions, using a process of co-creation with affected stakeholders. Climate change is one of the greatest contemporary challenges facing our society, presenting an urgent need for business transformation. As businesses navigate new challenges and opportunities, it is essential that stakeholders and communities across the value chain who are affected by climate change and climate solutions are actively involved and engaged. BSR acknowledges 7-Eleven International for their generous support with creating this issue brief. 7-Eleven International provided seed funding to BSR in 2023 to mobilize businesses toward climate justice and co-creation, ensuring that communities are at the center of solutions. #sustainablebusiness #climateaction #justtransition #bizhumanrights

Lots of interesting findings in this article on how companies are backing away from green target setting. I was caught by this sentence early on: "Most have justified the failure to keep up the effort with a common complaint: political and regulatory factors outside companies’ control are slowing progress." Yet another addition to the drumbeat of how important it is for companies to have a clear, right-sized strategy to align their advocacy efforts with their climate goals. It's probably true that some political issues are outside of a single company's control, but there remains a lot of untapped power for positive influence. Ensuring that there is a regulatory and investment incentive environment in place is critical, but too many companies are yet to realize the importance of this strategy. #climateaction #advocacy #climate #policy #CSR https://lnkd.in/egtuaG6r

Climate was barely a battleground for the UK election, so it's interesting to see the topic coming through so strongly in early critique of Kamala Harris' potential campaign focus. Strange for someone like me to say - but is this a good thing...? Is the middle-ground electorate of America looking for leadership on climate, or could the divisive nature of the climate conversation in the US be a turn-off? As our recent research shows, the challenge for any leader - and in this case Harris - will be to convince the electorate that there's something in it for them. If she can convince voters that backing climate policy is a no-brainer, that it can drive economic growth, seize leadership in technology and innovation, create jobs and ultimately make all of our lives better, then we might be on to a winner. #climatecommunications #USelection #sustainability #climate https://lnkd.in/eYQ9gk99

Industry associations wield significant power when it comes to policy advocacy. Businesses that actively engage with and review their industry associations’ climate positions will be better placed to influence these organisations and drive the policy outcomes needed to deliver on their net zero goals. The second session of our ‘Engaging in Corporate Climate Advocacy’ series, taking place next Wednesday, will explore how businesses can work towards aligning the climate policy positions and lobbying activities of their industry associations with their corporate net zero targets. Guest speakers include representatives from Principles for Responsible Investment, Bankers for Net Zero (B4NZ), Volans, and Iberdrola. This series is kindly supported by Clyde & Co. 💡Investors are increasingly asking for more transparency around companies’ climate policy engagement practices and how they are governed. According to data from S&P Global, resolutions related to climate change and corporate lobbying are outpacing other shareholder concerns this year. To help businesses meet these expectations, we are hosting a new, four-part ‘Engaging in Corporate Climate Advocacy’ webinar series, starting with an opening session on ‘Developing an Advocacy Strategy’. Join us next Wednesday (17 April, 14:00-15:30 BST) to learn how the corporate climate policy engagement landscape is evolving, key principles and governance mechanisms that should be considered when creating an effective, Paris-aligned climate advocacy strategy, and how companies can foster a culture of climate advocacy within the business – and beyond. Guest speakers include representatives from InfluenceMap, High-Level Climate Champions, BNP Paribas Asset Management, Nestlé, and Natura &Co. ➡️ Find out more and register here: https://bit.ly/4bfl91W #ClimateAdvocacy #Policy #NetZero

Trustee, Board Member, Advisory Board Chair, Company Secretary and Senior Vice President with over fifteen years board level experience. Sustainability expert, climate change advocate. Views my own.
Business can be and needs to be a force for good in tackling the climate and nature crises. Many businesses are taking leading and inspirational climate and nature action. However, in my experience businesses are usually focused on a few key metrics, often set in isolation rather than viewed systemically or through the lens of climate justice. They drive to “net zero”, strive for zero waste to landfill, hope to reduce their use of plastics, become a bit more circular, fly a little less and perhaps even seek to reduce their negative impact on nature. All laudable aims and goals but few businesses look at the issue from a holistic climate justice perspective. Charlotte Sewell ⚡🔶🌿 shared news about “The Business Guide to Advancing Climate Justice” earlier this week and I took the time to read it properly. I recommend it to all thoughtful CEOs, CSOs and board directors. Putting climate justice at the heart of a new business model could be viewed by many as radical, but what a difference it could make. Climate justice emphasizes learning from communities most affected by climate change to make climate action more effective and efficient. As the Guide says in a just future, business would ⚖ pay their fair share of taxes ⚖ proactively seek ways to become more environmentally active, even without the pressure of regulation ⚖ run their business truly against the triple bottom line of people, planet & profit ⚖ would be responsive to the needs of the community ⚖ recognize their role and responsibilities to the communities as a result of the global climate crisis ⚖ embrace a long-term view on value creation ⚖ enter into community partnerships that demand long term commitment and long term sustainability ⚖ take part in deep listening to diverse perspectives, both within their own business but with their key stakeholders and communities. The Guide says many businesses are hesitant to take action toward climate justice because they will be afraid of "failing or getting it wrong”. I suspect most businesses have never even considered climate justice as a topic worthy of discussion at Executive or Board level. So let’s encourage businesses to begin with a conversation and some education. Reading this Guide and using it as a basis for a first conversation would be a great place to start. Do you consider and discuss climate justice in your business? #climatecrisis #climateactionnow #climateleadership #climatejustice #community #triplebottomline

What does climate justice mean? Our very own Kenza Essalama and Karen Larbi recently took to the stage at the #BCorpFestivalUK in Oxford to deliver a powerful talk on climate justice and its strategic relevance to businesses. All three of their sessions sold out and it was fantastic to see so many business leaders engaging with this challenging but essential piece of the climate puzzle. Simply put, climate justice recognises the fact that the people and countries who are the least responsible for climate change are the ones who are suffering its worst impacts today. As Kenza and Karen explained, the operational risks of not addressing climate justice in your corporate strategy are critical - from exposing yourself to supply chain disruptions to harming your talent pipeline, you can't afford to ignore climate justice. If you're not sure where to start when it comes to climate justice and your business, our Climate Counsel service is the place to go.
