CEO, Playful Chartered Engineer, Design Lecturer and Play scholar on a mission to enable equitable, sustainable access to play and design
Continuing on from last weeks, play and urban design post. I want to recommend the concise article from Tim Gill below, which provides 3 great insights on how cities can cultivate more spaces for children. The 3rd point associated with public private partnerships handshake 🤝 for delivery is very pertinent, as more and more play spaces are closing or are inappropriate to the changed needs of the environment that surrounds it. National and local governments are frequently unable to deliver play spaces and child friendly infrastructure in general. Even when the policies are in place. As we know policies are often recommendations and not compulsory. Even in cases where there penalties 🛑 for not meeting mandatory requirements outlined with policies, there often seems be obscure ways for providers or local authorities/counties to compromise. That’s why institutions with enterprise and economic power are so important. When there is will, a vision, we need funding. What better way to improve your social impact and work towards a sustainable future than investing in play ? 🤔 #sustainabledevelopment #play #socialimpact #socialinnovation
Most children are growing up in cities and towns. Climate change, conflict and crises will drive millions more children and families to urban areas in the coming years. Investing in child-friendly urban planning is key to supporting healthy and happy urban childhoods and sustainable development. 🔗 Read our latest article by Tim Gill on three pathways local governments can take to make cities child-friendly: https://lnkd.in/e-UQF735

98% of C40 cities have faced severe climate risks like flooding and drought, threatening their economic and social prosperity. These risks worsen urban loss and damage, with the cities of low- and middle-income countries disproportionately impacted. C40 cities are implementing resilience measures and social protection systems to manage these threats, prioritising those most at risk due to climate devastation and social inequities. With support from The Scottish Government's climate justice fund: 🌍 Accra, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, and Freetown are developing policies for informal work, the just transition, and climate resilience. 🤝 Quezon City, Bogotá and Dar es Salaam are scaling up climate projects, creating green jobs for marginalised communities and empowering them to be part of the green and just transition. ➡️ Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Johannesburg, and Tshwane are piloting local initiatives and strengthening partnerships for a fair transition. ➕ Much more. Mayors realise the scale of the climate challenge, but they need the resources and a seat at the decision-making table to scale up action that protects residents and helps create a future where everyone can thrive. Making federal (and private and state) resources available isn't enough to get things done on the ground. 📢 We must all champion #EarlyWarningsForAll globally, advocating for increased investment and political will. 🚨Early warning systems have helped decrease deaths and reduced losses and damages resulting from hazardous weather, water, or climate events. 💔 However, major gaps exist, especially in small island developing states and least-developed countries. Over the past 50 years, some 70% of all deaths from climate-related disasters have occurred in the 46 poorest countries. 🫱🏽🫲🏼Together, we can make it a reality, saving lives and building resilience in a changing climate.

Over the last year the Inclusive Climate Action programme at C40 Cities has had the pleasure of working with The Scottish Government through their Climate Justice Fund to support cities in Africa, Asia and South America to pilot local policies and programmes on #lossanddamage, #justtransition and innovative approaches to #inclusiveclimate action. The partnership has been instrumental in driving forward urban solutions to the most pressing climate and socio-economic challenges in tandem, as well as supporting our global advocacy on the important subnational dimension of #lossanddamage and #justtransition in key forums. I am thrilled to share a few recently launched resources that showcase the outcomes of this work including: 📚 This incredible interactive piece on the action being taken at local level on urban #lossanddamage across a range of cities including snapshots of city action, quotes, photos and more: https://lnkd.in/eb2QsGqX ⚡ Brand new case studies of actions being piloted at local level in a range of cities on #lossanddamage #justtransition and #inclusiveclimateaction https://lnkd.in/eTWYmGYr ✊ A first of its kind youth report on #lossanddamage that provides youth perspectives from cities on this key intergenerational equity issue https://lnkd.in/eZ2Wk6eg 📽 An animated explainer video on the urban dimensions of #lossanddamage https://lnkd.in/ezT79tmH Please do dive in and welcome any questions on any of this work.
