Did You Know? The United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250 is the first attempt by the United Nations to give formal legitimacy and recognition to the efforts of youths on issues relating to #peace and #security. It is a historic and landmark document as it helps to change the negative perceptions people have about youth, by creating a new narrative of youths as agents of peacebuilding. It is also symbolic as it places youths at the centre of the international peacebuilding agenda, acknowledging their positive contributions to peace and security, while requesting programmes and policies by the UN member states and the international community and member states to ensure meaningful participation of youth in the peace and security agenda. #Youth4Peace #peoplebuildingpeace

The #SummitOfTheFuture offers a crucial opportunity for the UN to reassess the role of human rights in peace operations. 🕊 Over the past 30 years, peace missions have increasingly prioritized human rights, focusing on civilian protection and governance in fragile regions. However, there has been growing resistance, particularly around the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and child protection. This discussion is especially timely as the Summit will agree upon the Pact for the Future and the Declaration on Future Generations, both of which underscore human rights as central to international peace and security. UNU-CPR Senior Fellow Charles Hunt recently addressed these topics during a lecture at the Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria, where he drew from UNU-CPR's report on human rights in UN peace operations. The report, authored by researchers from UNU-CPR, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), the Center for Civilians in Conflict, and SIPRI, provides a thorough, evidence-based analysis of how promoting human rights strengthens mission effectiveness and broadens operational goals. Today, on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, we honor the courageous individuals who put their lives on the line to protect the vulnerable, defend human rights, and build a more peaceful world. Since 1948, over one million peacekeepers from 125 countries have served in UN missions across the globe. They come from diverse backgrounds but share a common commitment to fostering peace and stability in communities torn apart by conflict. Their work is difficult and often dangerous, yet they persist in the face of immense challenges. They are mediators, protectors, and healers, working tirelessly to break cycles of violence and lay the foundations for sustainable peace. As young changemakers, we have much to learn from their example of selfless service, cultural competence, and dedication to the greater good. On this day, let us not only pay tribute to fallen peacekeepers but also renew our own commitment to being agents of peace in our communities and beyond. The UN's Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (HRDDP) ensures that UN support to non-UN security forces adheres to human rights principles outlined in the UN Charter. Originally developed for peacekeeping missions, it now applies across all UN engagements with non-UN forces, including in peacebuilding. This UNU-CPR Policy Brief, informed by the 2024 Peacebuilding Fund Thematic Review on Human Rights and Peacebuilding, examines how HRDDP is applied across relevant projects and offers insights and recommendations for its effective use in peacebuilding initiatives. Ceases all forms of U.S. financial support to the UN, including assessed and voluntary contributions. Prohibits any U.S. involvement in UN peacekeeping operations. Revokes diplomatic immunity for UN officials within the United States. Formalizes withdrawal from the World Health Organization and other UN conventions. Sets stringent conditions for any future engagement with the UN, requiring Senate approval with explicit withdrawal provisions.

Women, Peace, and Security at the 75th NATO Summit For those who are unfamiliar, please look at this: S/RES/1325. Security Council Resolution on women and peace and security This was the first landmark Security Council resolution on women, peace and security. The resolution 1325 (2000) addresses the impact of war on women and the importance of women’s full and equal participation in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction.
