Corrie Pelc from Medical News Today reports on a recent study exploring the effects of hormone-modulating therapy (HMT) on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in women treated for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. HMT, which includes therapies that block estrogen or reduce its production, is commonly used to treat such cancers. Previous research has yielded conflicting findings regarding HMT's impact on dementia risk. However, a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that women aged 65 and older who received HMT after breast cancer diagnosis had a 7% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias compared to those who did not receive HMT. The study, led by researchers using data from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), analyzed nearly 19,000 women over 12 years. They found that while overall dementia risk was reduced with HMT, this protective effect varied with age and ethnicity. For instance, the protective effect was most pronounced in women aged 65 to 74 and was more significant among Black women in this age group compared to white women. However, the benefits of HMT diminished in older age groups. This research suggests a potential link between HMT and reduced dementia risk, especially in younger patients, but highlights the need for personalized treatment plans considering factors like age and ethnicity. Every year, around 400,000 #children and #adolescents develop #cancer. The most #common types of #childhood cancers include #leukemias, #brain cancers, #lymphomas and solid #tumours. Most childhood cancers can be #cured with #generic #medicines and other forms of #treatment, including #surgery and #radiotherapy. #Treatment of childhood cancer can be #cost-effective in all #income #settings. Only 29% of low-income countries report that cancer medicines are generally available to their populations compared to 96% of high-income countries. #Avoidable #deaths from childhood cancers in #LMICs result from #lack of #diagnosis, #misdiagnosis or #delayed diagnosis, #obstacles to #accessing #care, #abandonment of treatment, death from toxicity, and relapse. Childhood cancer data systems are needed to drive continuous improvements in the quality of care, and to inform policy decisions.
