We planted over 100 trees in Q1! 🌱🌲 How did we do it? We've partnered with JUST ONE Tree, pledging to plant a tree for every successful job placement! JUST ONE Tree focuses on holistic environmental restoration, addressing both land and ocean ecosystems. Their projects, like mangrove restoration in Madagascar and seagrass restoration in the UK, enhance biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and healthy fish stocks. At the end of their fourth year, they've achieved impressive milestones: 🌳 3,050,742 trees planted 🌍 1,561 acres restored 🍃 927,838 tonnes of CO2 removed 📌 11 countries planted in 📅 36,054 workdays provided in local communities Discover more about this wonderful charity, the canopy of benefits with trees, and the urgent need for ecological restoration on our blog! A coalition of passionate organizations—including Puelo Patagonia, Freyja Foundation and The Nature Conservancy—is uniting to protect the breathtaking beauty of the Cochamó district in southern Chile. 🇨🇱 Known for its ancient alerce trees and stunning Andean landscapes, this area is often referred to as the “Yosemite of South America.” Their primary goal? To raise $63 million to purchase and preserve the vital Puchegüín landholding, encompassing 133,000 hectares (329,000 acres) of pristine wilderness. “Cochamó’s beauty, its immensity, its vast ancient alerce forests with capacity to store carbon and mitigate climate change; its wide variety of endemic and endangered species; its community and traditional culture,” says Brady Robinson, philanthropy director of the Colorado-based Freyja Foundation. “We’re seizing a unique opportunity to protect an area of incomparable beauty and ecological value that has been threatened by hydroelectric and real estate projects, as well as by the arrival of unregulated tourism.” 🔗 Learn more about the program: https://bit.ly/3Zv2fkc #CochamoConservation #ProtectNature #PueloPatagonia #TheNatureConservancy #Patagonia #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

Empowering local communities with rights and responsibilities is crucial for successful nature restoration and reforestation projects. Studies have shown that involving indigenous and rural communities in forest restoration projects leads to more successful outcomes. In the Brazilian Amazon, community involvement resulted in greater protection and care for the restored forests. At the same time partnering with communities, organizations like Rainforest Alliance restore forests and improve livelihoods, ensuring long-term success. It is essential to consider the needs and perspectives of local communities when planning and implementing forest restoration initiatives. Engaging with communities can build support for conservation efforts and ensure that restoration projects benefit both people and nature. Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom's work further emphasizes the effectiveness of community management and protection of common resources when community members have the authority to do so. Let's work together to empower local communities and achieve successful restoration and reforestation projects. #CommunityEmpowerment #ForestRestoration #NatureConservation #naturerestoration #reforestation #communityengagement

To all carbon credits skeptics out there. This one is for you. A timely post by Rich Gilmore on how Carbon Credits are creating real and positive impact on the environment and how communities and indigenous people are benefiting from these Carbon Credits.
Carbon credits work. Not always perfectly, but they work. The Chyulu Hills REDD+ project - a partnership between the Kenyan government, local and Indigenous organizations, and global nonprofit Conservation International and auspiced by Verra - has: 👉 Prevented the release of 5 million tonnes of CO2🌳 👉 Conserved 410,000 hectares of the Tsavo-Amboseli grasslands 🐘 👉 Delivered meals to 35,000 children in 94 schools 🥗 👉 Provided 'transformational' funding to Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust 💵 The world needs these outcomes, now and forever. #carboncreditswork More information at Forbes below 👇

🌿 It's #WorldRainforestDay! 🌿 Here are some astonishing facts about rainforests: 🌍 Protecting rainforests is vital for a stable climate. These lush forests help regulate the Earth's temperature and weather patterns, making their preservation essential for our future. 🌳 Rainforests store and absorb up to 30% of global carbon emissions. Their role as carbon sinks is crucial in combating climate change and reducing the greenhouse effect. 🐒 Rainforests harbour half of the world’s biodiversity. From vibrant plants to diverse wildlife, these ecosystems are teeming with life, supporting millions of species. 🌿 Rainforests are home to many indigenous peoples. These communities have lived in harmony with the forests for centuries, preserving traditional knowledge and sustainable practices that are invaluable to conservation efforts. 🪵 Only 36% of the world’s original rainforests remain intact. The rapid rate of deforestation is alarming, and we must act now to conserve what remains and work towards restoration. 💧 Rainforests provide essential resources and ecosystem services to all of us. Beyond biodiversity, they offer medicinal plants, freshwater, and more, directly supporting human well-being. At JGI Belgium, we are dedicated to protecting rainforests and the incredible species that inhabit them, including chimpanzees. Our efforts in Africa focus on conservation and sustainable practices to safeguard these precious ecosystems. Join us in celebrating and protecting rainforests today and every day. Thanks to a £335,000 boost from Ocean Outdoor's Environmental Fund, we're raising awareness about the urgency of protecting our coral reefs. Every second breath we take comes from the ocean, and coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea. Our campaign will light up Ocean Outdoor's digital screens across the UK, showcasing stunning visuals that highlight the beauty and diversity of coral reefs. More importantly, we’ll show the strong connection each person has to these vital ecosystems. Since coral reefs contribute to the health of the oceans that provide 50% of our planet’s oxygen, protecting them is essential for all of us. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆! We believe today is a moment to celebrate shimmering lakes and the silent heroes beneath them—our wetlands. These vibrant ecosystems, often seen as "wastelands," are actually lifebloods, filtering our water, protecting us from floods, and teeming with biodiversity. Did you know they store more carbon than rainforests per unit area? Yet, wetlands face threats from pollution, development, and unsustainable practices. On this day, we urge you to: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻: Let's understand the value of wetlands. Share their stories, their functions, and their beauty. Knowledge is power. 𝗔𝗰𝘁: Support wetland conservation programs. Reduce your water footprint. Plant native trees near water bodies. Every action counts. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁: Be mindful of your impact. Dispose of waste responsibly. Don't pollute water sources. Remember, healthy wetlands mean healthy us! Together, let's be the guardians of these vital lifespaces. Just like a drop becomes a lake, small actions create a ripple effect of change. Let's celebrate #WorldWetlandsDay with action!

The mission of The Nature Conservancy in Africa is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. We are working with partners, communities, governments and supporters to create strong networks of conserved lands. We are driving science-guided action at ever-greater scales to protect freshwater biodiversity and the life-sustaining benefits that rivers, lakes, and wetlands provide to people. We are also protecting ocean habitats at all levels—from supporting community-led coastal and ocean protection efforts to helping nations build sustainable “blue economies.” Take a look at this snapshot of our impact in Africa between 2008 - 2023.
