As technology changes our world, using it responsibly for a better future for everyone – says #UNDP UNDP’s #Signals #Spotlight 2024 highlights some of the signals and trends UNDP sees emerging that it considers will be significant for development in the next 3 to 10 years. The latest report is now available at https://lnkd.in/gxBqYauN. It is most encouraging that almost all the observations that UNDP has made, hint toward a strong influence of technology, especially the golden thread – electricity (presence, or absence of it). IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)’s ongoing strategy right now, toward an All Electric and Connected Society, also dovetails well with this. It does not mean that we are already there – far from it. We have a long way to go to ensure that the world truly gains from meaningful collaborations and synergies between nations through global consensus standards. That is the role of IEC, and that is what energizes me, and brings a skip in my step, every single day. An incredible honor to address the United Nations General Assembly at the Summit of the Future, under the exceptional leadership of H.E. António Guterres. As we stand at the brink of a transformative era following the historic adoption of the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact (GDC), we are reminded that the real challenge lies in translating these ambitious goals into tangible action. Today marks a monumental moment in our journey. What began as a seed of an idea, whispers of a vision for a world united by digital prosperity, has blossomed into reality. Four years later, here we are, proudly representing the aspirations, efforts, and achievements of our 16 Member States, 800 million people, and dedicated observers. Together, we are fostering global cooperation to harness digital transformation for the greater good. As Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), I am deeply committed to driving the transition from digital consumers to producers and innovators. Now is the time to address the digital divide in all its forms whether it's the AI divide, gender digital divide, or skills gap ensuring that no one is left behind. Our true test lies in our collective ability to bring the GDC principles to life. I call on every nation, organization, and individual to join forces in this critical mission. We are not here just to make history; our eyes are fixed on designing a future where every nation, every community, and every individual can thrive in an equitable and prosperous digital world. The #SummitOfTheFuture is not just a milestone—it is a global movement. September 2024 will be remembered as the moment when the world came together to shape #OurCommonFuture. This summit represents more than a gathering; it marks a new era of multilateralism that is inclusive, effective, and interconnected, addressing the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. With leaders from around the globe uniting under the United Nations, this summit is set to redefine global governance, confront complex global risks, and solidify our commitments to sustainable development, climate action, and peace. For the outcome, world leaders have adopted the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. The Pact focuses on five key pillars: sustainable development, peace and security, digital cooperation, youth empowerment, and transforming global governance. For the first time ever, the Global Digital Compact establishes a framework for AI and digital cooperation, while the Declaration on Future Generations ensures future generations have a meaningful voice in shaping their world.
