Ukrainian cities face ongoing threats and require immediate recovery, alongside sustainable urban development strategies. How can we effectively combine these approaches to enhance urban resilience? Over 30 international experts from city administrations, universities, NGOs, and city associations gathered to discuss urban resilience during wartime at an Workshop. Experts shared research findings on integrating urban resilience into Integrated Urban Development Concepts (IUDC), emphasizing the need for action-oriented approaches during crises. Researchers from RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and HafenCity Universität Hamburg (HCU) presented vulnerability and resilience criteria essential for urban planning strategies. Discussions included urban regeneration strategies and the importance of EU collaboration in protecting civil society and energy infrastructure. This initiative will continue with future workshops, implementing criteria in case studies. It is part of the project "Strengthening Urban Resilience in the Areas of Supply Infrastructure and Housing in Ukraine (SUR)," funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Ukraine. #GIZ

📢 United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and partners have renewed commitment to #Kharkiv reconstruction at #UkraineRecovery Conference (#URC2024), calling for greater support amid continued devastation. “UNECE is steadfast in its commitment to support the City of Kharkiv and the broader #urban recovery efforts of the Government of #Ukraine, mobilizing the best international expertise in cooperation with Ukrainian and local stakeholders. But it is clear that much greater financial and technical support is needed to ensure the continuation of activities and to scale up assistance in line with the continuing devastation in urban areas of Ukraine”, said UNECE Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean. Recalling that UNECE was among the first partners to collaborate with the City of Kharkiv on long-term reconstruction planning following the start of the war against Ukraine, Ms. Molcean laid out plans to scale up work though the UNECE-led #UN4UkrainianCities initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Rebuilding Ukraine's Future, One City at a Time The past months have been an intense marathon of calls, networking, and events leading up to the Future State Congress. It's exhausting, but what keeps me going every day is the future and the real projects with real people we're connecting to that future. One such project is re:build Ukraine. At today’s Grand Bargain Annual Meeting, we reaffirmed IFRC’s dedication to this mission, recognizing that there is no ‘one-size fits 191 National Societies’ approach. Through instruments like the Capacity Building Fund and the National Societies Investment Alliance, we are enhancing access to resources, enabling National Societies to address institutional capacity building and tackle identified technical gaps. Strengthening local capacity is essential for delivering effective and sustainable humanitarian responses.

Reconstruction of Ukraine should apply sustainable building practices, where specific knowledge and skills are needed. Access to these programs allows us to implement European practices in energy efficiency and good governance, which is critical to improving the quality of life in our communities. Having the opportunity to be heard by experts and join European initiatives is a chance for sustainable development and rebuilding of Ukrainian cities based on modern, environmentally friendly solutions.
