Wetlands are full of life. 🏞️ Did you know how flamingos depend on #wetlands? Wading around their wetland homes, flamingos depend on them to feed, breed and flourish. Without wetlands, there would be no flamingos. Like many other birds around the world, their habitats are becoming increasingly threatened. This World Migratory Bird Day, we look at how national ecosystem assessments in Vietnam and Ethiopia, supported by the NEA Initiative at UNEP-WCMC, bring up-to-date information on the status and drivers of loss of wetlands. Ecosystem assessments play a significant role in synthesising and communicating complex information about wetlands in these countries, meeting the information needs of policymakers and stakeholders of relevant sectors to protect wetlands now, and in the future. #WMBD2023 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eEur4XR8

🚨New #blog🚨 Most recent, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases originate in animals and spread into people. Also known as #zoonotic diseases, they continue to remain a threat to human health and prosperity. Across Central Asia, zoonotic diseases continue to heavily impact agriculture and societal well-being. In order to address this and take measures to reduce their impacts, the ‘One Health in nature conservation in Central Asia’ initiative, was officially launched at the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) #COP14, with it’s official kick-off meetings taking place last week, and led by IUCN. The initiative aims to strengthen protected and conserved areas and reduce human and #wildlife interactions which in turn, would prevent the emergence and spread of zoonotic diseases. 🌏 🐾 💪 In our latest blog, we speak to officers Brett Wilson and Emily Howland from UNEP-WCMC’s Protected Planet initiative about the their hopes from the project and how stronger #ProtectedAreas could pave the way for better #health outcomes for wildlife and people. We discuss: 🔸 The purpose of the One Health in Central Asia initiative 🔸 The link between protected areas and human health 🔸 Ambitions of governments in Central Asia towards the initiative 🔸 UNEP-WCMC’s role and involvement in the initiative Read the full conversation with our experts here: https://bit.ly/3MApG3W #ProtectedAreas #conservation #OneHealth #Health #ForNature
