The National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) Initiative at UNEP-WCMC reflects upon its annual global capacity-building workshop held in Cambridge in September. The workshop brought together 29 representatives from Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Malawi and Thailand. The workshop served as a platform for sharing lessons learned, exchanging knowledge on best practices in national ecosystem assessments, showcasing accomplishments of countries, their experiences and progress. It also facilitated the dissemination of key tools developed by UNEP-WCMC and its partners to support the national ecosystem assessment process. The workshop was a blend of learning and cultural exchange. 🌿 ✨ Read our latest blog to learn more about the activities and outcomes of the workshop: https://lnkd.in/dNc7TaWP

The Indus River is crucial to Pakistan. 90% of the country’s 250 million inhabitants live on the banks of the 50 km long river and depend on its multifarious ecological and economic benefits. The river has sustained people and wildlife for thousands of years, yet its future is uncertain. In the past 15 years, an above-average level of flooding and the effects of climate emergency have made the river highly vulnerable. During his visit at UNEP-WCMC’s headquarters last month, Professor Adil Najam, President of WWF shared some key insights from the Living Indus initiative, developed by Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and the United Nations in Pakistan. Thailand’s National Ecosystem Assessment Scoping Report is now available 🇹🇭 📑 🌿 During the scoping stage of the assessment, the Thai National Ecosystem Assessment team collaborated with diverse stakeholders and knowledge holders from within the country to identify the framework and direction of the assessment. Based on this multi-stakeholder consultation, the scoping report outlines the background of the assessment, the anticipated approach, and the action plan for the expert evaluation stage. Importantly, the report has identified several key policy questions that the assessment will address: 👉 How do marine ecosystems and their ecosystem services contribute to the national economy and human well-being in Thailand? 👉 What are the investment gaps and how can the private sector engage meaningfully in supporting Thailand’s NEA and marine conservation, sustainable use, and restoration in general? 👉 How can Indigenous and local knowledge contribute to the understanding of status and trends of coastal and marine biodiversity and ecosystem services and be strengthened to contribute to the sustainable management of ecosystems and biodiversity? 👉 What are the best institutional arrangements and governance systems to support the conservation of marine biodiversity and ecosystem services? 👉 How can the findings/recommendations of the national ecosystem assessment be integrated into national policies and transformed into scenario planning? To learn more about how the Thailand National Ecosystem Assessment will be conducted, please read the full report ⬇️

On 25th October at the CBD #COP16Colombia in Cali, UNEP-WCMC, Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (Cebds), WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, Government of Colombia and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity co-hosted a side event about implementation of Target 15 in megadiverse countries. Our expert Alena Cierna presented key findings from the "Accountability for Nature" report developed by UNEP-WCMC and United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), which compares seven leading corporate assessment and disclosure frameworks and standards. The report identifies areas of increasing alignment and also further improvement in the methodologies and guidance offered by the frameworks and standards. The event included two panel discussions. The first one focused on exchanging lessons from governments of megadiverse countries. The panel included 🔸 Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias from the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Chnage, 🔸 Juan Camilo Pinto from the Colombia Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and 🔸 Oliver Angocillo from the ASEAN Centre of Biodiversity. The second part of the event focused on sharing insights from the private sector. 🔸 Vanessa Pereira from CEBDS presented lessons learned from pilots of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework in Brazil, 🔸 The Colombian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CECODES) presented their experience from supporting implementation of Target 15 in Colombia 🔸 Warwick Mostert from Anglo American presented examples of private sector engagement in Target 15 implementation in South Africa. Connect with our experts Alena Cierna, Matt Jones, Rodrigo Cassola and Stacey Baggaley at #COP16Colombia to know more about how private sector can engage with nature and support the implementation of the global biodiversity goals and targets. #PeaceWithNature #privatesector #ForNature #COP16Cali #biodiversity #financefornature #Target15

It’s World Cities Day today! 🏙️ 🌿 As we observe the international day, we revisit our blog penned by WCMC Chief Executive Officer and Senior Representative at UNEP-WCMC, Jonathan Hughes, reflect on how metrics and indicators can help drive ambition on urban nature, with the case study of Barcelona. Developed with IUCN, the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes (UNI), a science-based tool is designed to enable cities around the world to understand, measure and set targets to improve urban nature. Why do protected areas matter for investors? 🏞️ Investors are crucial in helping halt and reverse #biodiversityloss through their capital allocation and investing in protected and conserved areas, which are an instrumental conservation tool with demonstrated impacts. Investors can help achieve Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework #GBF by ensuring investments do not undermine area-based conservation efforts and further support other biodiversity goals and targets within the framework. In our paper with ShareAction, released last month, experts delved into the importance of understanding how to invest better to safeguard protected and conserved areas. The paper explores how investments in activities that negatively impact protected and conserved areas would expose the financial sector to nature-related physical and transition risks. It further explains the potential financial implications through, for example reputational damage, loss of market value of the investment, significant remediation costs, and potential lawsuits. Earlier on Monday, UNEP-WCMC's Protected Planet initiative launched the Protected Planet report 2024 at #COP16Colombia, which provides a global stocktake on the state of protected and conserved areas. Read our latest work to learn more about their interlinkages and how the private sector can be more involved in progressing works to positively impact biodiversity goals and targets.
