As we lead into the Africa Year of Education, and under the leadership of Africa, world leaders have an opportunity to solidify commitments to ‘Educate an Africa Fit for the 21st Century’. That means to empower Africa to deliver on the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Paris Agreement and Convention on the Rights of the Child, and to invest in an end to inequity through the power of quality education and lifelong learning.

The African Heads of State and Government have designated 2024 as the Year of Education for the continent. The theme for 2024 is "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa". #africa #africanleaders #africandevelopment

The report entitled "Education in Africa: Placing Equity at the Heart of Policy", published jointly by UNESCO and the AU, reveals that, although many countries in Africa are taking important steps to provide quality education for all, the region has the largest out-of-school population in the world. Happy Friday ✨!   As we end this week, did you know that the African Union (AU) declared 2024 as the year of Education? This means that it’s a historical time to not only put education at the centre of political discourse and priorities, but also, to invest much more in #AfricanEducationSystems. The AU proposes to do this by:   🎯 Developing and implementing effective, long-lasting, system-wide transformational strategies for education. 🎯 Proper financing of Africa's education ambition, thus addressing the constrained education financing landscape. 🎯 Emphasising the role of teachers as key agents of transformation; investing in them and collaborating with them. By transforming African education systems (as Kenya is doing through the new competency-based curriculum), we’ll be moving towards equipping current and future generations with the requisite 21st century skills which encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning.    Dedicating 2024 to Education in Africa is critical in galvanising our collective actions, commitment and resources towards attainment of #SDG4QualityEducation. As the AU's Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government (C10) convenes today to pledge support for the 2024 AU Education Roadmap, it is imperative for us, also, to take stock and renew our commitments to address challenges in the sector and build resilient systems for increased access to inclusive, accessible, quality and relevant education in Africa 🌍 🎓.   Do you agree? It all began back in 2018, when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as the International Day of Education. This day was conceived to celebrate the profound role of education in fostering peace and development worldwide. Resolution 73/25, co-authored by Nigeria and 58 other member states, is a testament to the unwavering political will to support transformative actions for inclusive, equitable, and quality education. It was a call to action for stakeholders across the spectrum, from governments and UN organizations to civil society, NGOs, academia, the private sector, and individuals, to unite in commitment to education. Why does it matter? Universal access to quality education is not just a goal; it’s a fundamental tool for sustainable development. Education goes beyond the classroom; it shapes our values, attitudes, and the very fabric of society. This year, we celebrate the 6th anniversary of the International Day of Education. Let's reflect on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead. It’s a moment to acknowledge the gaps and work collectively to bridge them, ensuring every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to unleash their potential through education. As we celebrate 5 years of empowering every child to reach their full potential.. Here are 5 lessons from my fellowship journey: 1. Persistence Prevails:Through five years of dedication, we've learned that consistent effort is key to overcoming obstacles in education equity. Every small step forward counts towards our vision of universal quality education. 2. Community Collaboration: Our journey has taught us the power of partnerships. By working hand in hand with communities, we've amplified our impact and created sustainable change, ensuring every Kenyan child has access to education, regardless of their background. 3. Innovation Ignites Change: Embracing innovation has been pivotal. From tech-driven solutions to creative teaching methods, we've found innovative ways to break barriers and nurture each child's potential. 4. Empathy Empowers: Understanding the diverse challenges faced by underserved communities has fueled our empathy. By listening to and empathizing with the children and families we serve, we've tailored interventions that truly make a difference. 5. Celebrating Milestones: Reflecting on our journey, it's crucial to celebrate milestones, both big and small.
