Exciting News! The initial draft of the 2025 UNESCO cultural statistics framework incorporates a value-based approach (#VBA). VBA is a multidisciplinary research approach rooted in the belief that values drive the pursuit of societal goals, leading to actions to achieve those goals. We are honoured that UNESCO experts acknowledge the contribution of the VBA methodology to the Theory of Value debate! On another note, UNESCO has initiated consultations on the new UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics. The framework aims to assess the impact of culture on society and includes major innovations. UNESCO seeks to enhance the understanding of cultural statistics by using international experiences, classification systems, and feedback from cultural and creative stakeholders. #globalsouth important action: UNESCO is Revising its Framework for #CultureStatistics The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) has launched a #publicconsultation on the revised UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics (FCS). This updated framework aims to provide a comprehensive and globally-relevant set of standards for measuring cultural participation, employment, and economic contribution. key element to consider: 🔵 This is a unique opportunity for global south CCI actors to ensure our perspectives, values and systems are represented. 🔵 This is a collective effort to keep CCI high in development agenda in recognistion of our role in building just, responsible and sustainable future. 🔵 The consultation is open until #September2024, inviting feedback from national statistical offices, policymakers, and cultural stakeholders worldwide. Today I discovered that 'Yumi Sabe' is an Australian Kriol term that translates to 'we know', or, 'we have the knowledge'. Yumi Sabe is also the name of a data platform showcasing the complexity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's research and culture. As an attendee of a webinar hosted by Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), I was given a cook's tour of the platform by Carolyn Jeffries, Assistant Director of AIATSIS' Indigenous Research Exchange Team. I was impressed by how user-friendly Yumi Sabe is and the thought and dedication of the team behind its creation. You can search the data and information by language group, by topic or geospatially. It's a neat piece of kit. There are currently over 480 Indigenous projects in Yumi Sabe. If you or your organisation have done research focused on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, check out Yumi Sabe and see if it's listed. And if it isn't, contact the folks at AIATSIS so it can be. And if you or your organisation works to improve policies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Yumi Sabe will be a treasure trove of data and information to inform your work. #dataplatform #IndigenousResearchExchange #IndigenousCommunities #researchers #policymakers

Both are data! Data comes from diverse sources, including Western research methods and traditional First Nations knowledge from oral histories. While statistics offer structured frameworks, traditional wisdom enriches insights with intergenerational perspectives and cultural context. Integrating both ensures holistic understanding, preserves cultural heritage and language, empowers communities, and fosters inclusive narratives.

🌍 A world map of political cultures 🌏 A new article by WZB researcher Jianghong Li and Anneli Kaasa (University of Tartu) delves into how political cultures shape social systems worldwide and invites a rethinking of our global perspectives.   Here are five key insights:   1. **Freedom vs. Concern**:   - The spectrum between individual freedom and collectivist concern underpins differing political cultures worldwide. Cultures favoring individualism cherish freedom of speech, self-expression, and autonomy, while collectivist cultures prioritize social harmony, overcoming resource constraints, and survival concerns, often leading to the rejection of outgroups.   2. **Responsibility vs. Faith/Tradition**: This cultural dimension contrasts societies valuing personal responsibility and independence with those that put faith in traditions and authorities (e.g., God, state). Countries span a range between these poles, affecting their political regimes and citizen participation in democracy.   3. **Cultural Dimensions and Democracy**: Democracies in the Global North largely correlate with cultures emphasizing freedom and responsibility. Conversely, in the Global South, societies often prioritize survival and tradition/faith, leading to fewer full democracies and more flawed ones, as evidenced by the 2023 Democracy Index. However, this is not a rule that applies for all countries.   4. **Research Implications**: The authors stress the importance of contextualizing academic research within local cultural, social, economic, and political conditions. This approach challenges researchers from the Global North to adopt a broader, culturally sensitive and respectful perspective when analyzing Global South societies.   5. **Global South vs. Global North**: The article highlights the stark differences and challenges in democracy and political culture between the Global North and Global South. It calls for a nuanced understanding of the Global South: Such an understanding transcends biases and prejudice and recognizes the importance of the local cultural specifics critical for meaningful research and policy-making.   The article offers some insights on how political cultures and societal values can significantly impact the emergence of certain political systems and the functions and acceptance of these systems across the globe. This knowledge is crucial for academics, policymakers, and global leaders aiming to foster inclusive, fair, respectful exchange and cooperation.
