SAL Consulting honours and acknowledges today as the International Day of Education, celebrated every 24 January. UNESCO is dedicating this day in 2024 to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon which has snowballed in recent years with the use of social media, damaging the fabric of our societies. The world is seeing a surge of violent conflicts paralleled by an alarming rise of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech. The impact of this violence transcends any boundary based on geography, gender, race, religion, politics, offline and online. An active commitment to peace is more urgent today than ever: Education is central to this endeavour. Learning for peace must be transformative, and help empower learners with the necessary knowledge, values, attitudes and skills and behaviours to become agents of peace in their communities.

We must urgently revisit how humans create impact in this world. I am saying this from the space of reflecting and examining this notion for years as a genetic engineer and synthetic biologist who extended my reach beyond my research lab for years. I studied the humans behind innovation in the process of making media and stories about the direction of biotech and underwent years of personal reflection about what or who I am in the world that operates from the space of "control, individualism, "star is born" and "be first". The best impact is not merely through data and science, it is through tapping into our deepest human potentials, it is through becoming more "human", and through revisiting our relationship with our work with "attention" and "intention". It should come from the place of empathy and compassion and employing soft skills such as emotional, spiritual and collective intelligence. Lessons that we learn in humanities and liberal art programs. It is so encouraging to see that the talk about the importance of these issues more and more, because doing so would not only impact economy positively but also creates more responsible and reflective technologies for the future generation.
