Slides from the final class of my recent Food Journalism in France program co-taught with Naira Davlashyan: https://lnkd.in/gXMnAzhA In this deck, I outline parallels between the challenges that the food and journalism industries face, as well as 11 strategic challenges faced by food journalism and some potential solutions to them. Much of the discussion is focused on tackling questions of inequity in both the stories told, and who gets to tell them. I also challenged my University of Oregon students to think about whether in doing this, as well as addressing issues of climate change, etc., we should also encourage journalism to take on more of a role in pushing for policy changes. Journalism has always played a campaigning role, either explicitly or implicitly. Yet, some feel this is at odds with traditional journalistic values. I disagree. And, perhaps not surprisingly, so do my University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication students... When it comes to these types of issues, there's a duty to inform, educate and entertain. But to this Reithian mantra, should we also be arguing for the role of journalism in helping to reduce inequities, promote sustainability, advocate for greater animal welfare, and doing more to provide communities with the tools and solutions they need to tackle some of the biggest issues of the day? #media #journalism #food #foodjournalism #education

5 reasons why you should hire a journalist or recovering journalist for your organization or company: 1- We get things done. 2- We pay attention to the big picture and small details. 3- We are sticklers for grammar. 4- We check facts. 5- Did I mention we get things done? 6- Bonus: We can learn anything if properly trained.

🍕 For a moment in college, I studied journalism and something stuck with me that I think can help you attract more people to your events: every promo post needs to answer 5 W’s and 1 H. Who. What. Where. Why. When. How. People miss this all the time and I totally get it. We’re often too close to our own work and we think everyone pays attention to the details, but they don’t. We have to make it easy for people to do the things we want them to, like joining our event or buying our product. The easiest example (that I see too often) is with food trucks. It makes me so hangry! They’ll post on Instagram, “we’re here! come get our delicious pizza!” And I’m like “you’re a food truck. You could be anywhere. Tell me where you are so I can buy your delicious pizza!” (When I ask, they send me a PM instead of answering in the comments for everyone else who wants to know. 🤯 That’s a different story.) Don’t be like the pizza truck. Make it easy for people to eat your pizza. When you’re promoting your event (the What), remember to tell people Who will benefit, Why they should join, When it is, Where to find it, and How to access. Remember this lesson from journalism (and pizza) and answer the 5 W’s and 1 H in all of your promotions. 🌲✍️ This is part of my writing advent project.
