We now estimate that we would need to spend twice what we originally budgeted to spend on food this year to meet the ongoing need. This leaves us with a critical gap between the amount of food people in our community need and the amount of food we can provide. Referring people to other food pantries is not the answer, since they are all facing the same critical challenges we are. It is a very difficult and disturbing truth for all of us. While we are deeply concerned, we remain hopeful. We have a generous community, tremendous volunteers, and a skilled and committed staff. Together we can make sure people in our community have the most basic and critical of all needs met and that our neighbors don’t have to experience hunger. Agreed! Food insecurity is a real problem that affects people all over the state. Unfortunately, the answer can't simply be "visit a food bank near you". We need to talk about why there are food deserts all over our state. We need to talk about why black and brown families suffer disproportionately from food insecurity. We need to talk about why (in many cases) college students experience food insecurity at levels twice as high as the general population. Then, after we've talked about it, we need to do something about it. Something real and substantive. What we need is justice. Food justice for all!

The predictions around how many food parcels will be needed this winter are worrying to say the least. #FoodBanks have become a new emergency service for many people and recently, more working familes are needing to visit them due to low wages and high rents and bills. Supporting your local food bank by donating food and other essentials. This winter more people than ever are being driven to food banks and the sharp increase in people needing help is outstripping food donations. Donations are vital to ensure food banks can continue to help everyone referred to them. How to donate food 1. Donate directly to your local food bank. 2. Drop off at collection points in supermarkets across the country. 3. Make a financial donation to your local food bank on their website, so they can buy what they need. 4. Add items to your online supermarket shop (where available) to send directly to the food bank. 5. Host a collection for your local food bank at your school, church or business. Or by hosting a food drive. Items to donate It’s best to check on your local food bank’s website or social media to see which items they need most. It’s not all about profit... Food banks help families who are at a crisis point and need support through the provision of food, So, when Meon Valley Food Bank reached out for a new floor, we decided to build a new floor for the facility free of charge.  The project was managed by Richard Woods and we installed Silikal® R61 MMA Trowelled Quartz Screed. Unlike a standard commercial contract, this project didn't have the same level of pressure, but it did make me think about how short life is and how fortunate we are. Rising food costs have made it challenging for people to feed themselves and as a result has stretched many charitable food organizations thin. Our goal with our newly named Food Security Campaign is to help these organizations nourish communities in need. Food insecurity is a complex issue impacting more than 33 million people in the United States, including 9.3 million children. As part of our Recipe for Change, we’re committed to fighting food insecurity at a local level, so all our neighbors can thrive. Each year our stores donate millions of pounds of food to local organizations that are on the front lines in the fight against hunger. In 2022, we donated more than 80 million pounds of food from our stores, distribution centers, and manufacturing plants to Feeding America partners—the equivalent of enabling more than 65 million meals.  Nourishing Neighbors, a charitable program of Albertsons Companies Foundation, raised over $40 million in 2022. These funds enabled the donation of more than 188 million meals for those living in our communities as well as people in need in Ukraine. No one should have to choose between feeding their families and other basic necessities. Organizations such as those gathered at the Capitol today fulfill a vital role in our community: ensuring that all people have access to fresh, healthy food. Thanks to their tireless efforts, we can work towards a Wisconsin where no one goes hungry. Ensuring that everyone has the ability to feed their families should be a top priority in our state. That is why it is essential that we provide food pantries and other food service organizations with the necessary resources to carry out their essential mission. As demand for their services increases, so should our support of their efforts. The time is now to act in alignment with our values. It is not enough to say that all people deserve to have food on the table – we need to ensure that food makes it there. That is why I am proud to stand beside each and every one of these vital organizations and uplift their call for additional funding and resources so they can continue to serve our communities. Only by working together can we create a more fair and equitable Wisconsin where everyone has what they need to grow and thrive.
