It's time for peace in Sudan

The war in Sudan has reached more than 330 days, and in that time, Sudanese children have endured not just the violence itself, but the hardships of displacement. According to UNICEF, an estimated 3.5 million children are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year, including over 700,000 who are expected to require specialized, life-saving treatment. It's been 1 year since violent conflict broke out in #Sudan and millions of children’s lives were torn apart and changed forever. One year of unimaginable loss, of physical and emotional distress, and of prevalent violations of children’s rights: ⚠️ Over 15,000 people have been reportedly killed. ⚠️ Over 4 million children are now displaced - the largest child displacement crisis in the world. ⚠️ Nearly 5 million people are one step away from famine. ⚠️ 1 in 2 children have been within 5 km of the frontline of the conflict over the past year - the highest rate of child exposure in the world. This all comes as Sudan was already facing its worst-ever humanitarian crisis, with 1 in 2 people needing assistance. One year of #SudanCrisis In a press zoom to mark one year of devastating fighting in #Sudan, Save the Children South Sudan's Country Director, Pornpun Jib Rabiltossaporn and her counterpart in Sudan, Dr Arif Noo joined, Inger Ashing, Save the Children International CEO who has recently visited South Sudan to see Save the Children's work with refugees from Sudan. About 1,000 people a day are fleeing into #SouthSudan from Sudan after a year of war, arriving in scorching heat and with children in dire need of support. In Africa, when we hear about countries like DRC, what often comes to mind is the relentless cycle of war and suffering. Yet, behind the headlines lies a stark reality of human tragedy, particularly for the most vulnerable among us, the children. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other conflict-ridden regions like Somalia, South Sudan and others, innocent lives are shattered daily by violence, displacement, and deprivation. Children, in particular, bear the brunt of this turmoil, growing in fear, trauma, and enduring the horrible effects of conflict. Children in these areas are deprived of their childhood and basic rights. They face unimaginable challenges as mere survival becomes a daily struggle. In principle, leaders of nations that have facilitated or enabled human rights violations and war crimes should be held accountable under international law. This includes Western leaders who have provided support to Israel while failing to adequately address the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has opened an investigation into possible war crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, which could potentially hold individuals responsible for their actions. However, the ICC's jurisdiction is limited, and the process of bringing leaders to justice can be difficult and lengthy. Civil society organizations and human rights activists continue to call for accountability and justice for the Palestinian people, including through the use of universal jurisdiction laws, which allow national courts to prosecute individuals for certain international crimes regardless of where they were committed. Gaza and its' Population Systematically Annihilated The blockade of Gaza has led to severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods, which has had devastating consequences for the population, including high levels of unemployment, food insecurity, and limited access to essential services like healthcare and education. This has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict and recurring violence in the region. Humanitarian organizations like the World Food Programme and UNICEF are providing assistance to affected families, but the root causes of the crisis need to be addressed to ensure long-term stability and security for the people of Gaza. Raise a valid point. The ongoing crisis in Gaza is a complex issue with multiple factors and actors involved. While humanitarian aid is essential to address the urgent needs of the Palestinian people, it's also important to hold accountable the nations that have contributed to the crisis. This includes countries that have provided military and diplomatic support to Israel, enabling the prolonged blockade and occupation of Palestinian territories. Additionally, the international community has been criticized for not doing enough to prevent the humanitarian crisis, including for cutting the funding of UNWRA , leading to death, destruction, and extreme suffering of multitudes, and the displacement of Palestinians. Countries in the West, have faced particular scrutiny for their perceived complicity in the crisis. It's crucial to continue advocating for a just and lasting solution that respects the human rights of all Palestinians and holds accountable those responsible for perpetuating the crisis.
