How do you practice proper hygiene behaviour in your school? In Nikierere Primary School in Kiribati, a WASH club led by students from Years 1-6 is responsible for ensuring proper hygiene behaviours and encouraging their family to do the same. With support from UNICEF Aotearoa and New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, UNICEF is ensuring improved access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in outer island primary schools in Kiribati.
The success of this year’s Beat Dan Carter campaign was driven by everyday New Zealanders, young and old, who not only love rugby, but who want to see tamariki thrive. “Always look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Beloved children's TV show host Fred Rogers popularised this quote in his 1983 book, Mister Rogers Talks with Parents. But the world is a very different place now to what it was 40 years ago, where disasters are livestreamed on our phones, TVs and laptops 24/7. And tragically, humanitarian aid workers are caught up in the crossfire like never before. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for the helpers, especially for those on the ground in Gaza. They are doing everything to protect and help children and their families survive. This past year, the news and Images of children and families affected by the crisis in Gaza have triggered deep emotions for donors, supporters and everyone invested in the rights of children. We were proud to present alongside UNICEF Young Ambassador alumni Thomas Blakie, to the select committee hearing on the future of oil and gas exploration in New Zealand.
