🌟 Celebrating Advocacy & Reflections on a Milestone Day 🌟   Yesterday marked a significant milestone for the HIMSS state chapter, and it felt monumental. As a healthcare consultant striving to make impactful changes, it was not just another day for me. It also served as a vivid reminder of my journey and aspirations.   You see, from an early age, I've been deeply fascinated by our world leaders' capabilities to incite change. This passion once had me contemplating a move to Austin, envisioning a future as a lobbyist advocating for comprehensive healthcare reform. My love for Austin remains undiminished despite my career taking a slightly different path.   This experience symbolizes the essence of advocacy. It's about finding your voice, aligning with causes that matter, and realizing that the journey to change is a blend of community collaborations. Since 2016, West Virginia University Health System has folded 14 hospitals into its network — including three hospitals last year alone — creating an emerging 25-hospital Goliath that reaches into Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland. And in January, the health system, which is branded WVU Medicine, is expected to add the 218-bed Weirton Medical Center in the northern panhandle of West Virginia to the system portfolio, pending regulatory approval, as revenue from overall core operations increased 48.3% to $5.9 billion in 2023 from $3.8 billion in 2021, according to a new report from S&P Global Ratings. Going Live: A Retrospective on Ocala Neighborhood Hospital This week marked a big milestone: we successfully went live at Ocala Neighborhood Hospital. Having been part of over a dozen go-lives with the Ascendco platform, I’ve seen it all—from hospitals that were still using paper to those transitioning from outdated systems, and now to brand new facilities built from scratch. Each one brings its own set of challenges and advantages. One thing I've learned through all these experiences is the universal importance of planning. No matter the situation, having all the stakeholders—OR, Supply, Facilities, IT, and Sterile Processing—work closely together is key. It's all about collaboration. The Importance of Planning Planning isn't just about schedules and resources; it’s about using that time to clean up and standardize data. This preparatory stage is crucial. By sorting out data discrepancies and aligning processes early on, we avoid many issues during the go-live. Collaboration is Key Effective communication and teamwork among all departments are essential. Everyone has a role to play, and their input is vital. Regular meetings, clear communication channels, and a mutual understanding of each department's needs and challenges keep us all on the same page. Hitting Critical Dates and Milestones Meeting critical dates and milestones is crucial. These checkpoints ensure we stay on track and can address any issues promptly. A structured timeline with well-defined milestones helps us monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. A Smooth Transition The result of all this planning, data standardization, and collaboration is the smooth, problem-free go-live that Ascendco is known for. When everything is in place, the transition is seamless, and the hospital staff can immediately benefit from the new system without any workflow disruptions. Looking Ahead As we celebrate the success at Ocala Neighborhood Hospital, we also look forward to future go-lives with renewed confidence. Each experience teaches us valuable lessons and reinforces the importance of planning and collaboration.
