Ever wonder why fitting out retail stores at airports is so much more expensive than in shopping centres ? It's a source of frustration for all the duty free, F&B and specialty retail folks operating in the airport space. That's why The Mercurius Group, The Moodie Davitt Report and the Australian Airports Association scheduled a panel discussion on this very topic at the recent AAA Retail & Commercial Forum, held in Melbourne from 22-24 July. And what a gem of a panel it was! Despite being given the graveyard shift (the last presentation of a 3-day conference) and an unassuming - quantity surveyor style manner - Ed Dunne from Turner & Townsend produced what is a strong contender for best presentation of the conference with a forensic, fact driven and feature packed analysis of the drivers of high airport fitout costs. A key theme of the Forum was the provision of data and insights as input into panel discussions and Ed produced this brilliantly. The panel went on to discuss ways in which airport retail fitout costs could be reduced. It's an important topic that goes to the heart of the attractiveness of airports as retail space and to how much rent retailers can afford to pay airports. Every airport should take note! As with many segments of the shipping industry, the project cargo trade experienced a boom during the pandemic owing to the constraints on available tonnage to match demand. This development emphasised the importance of careful stowage of multifaceted cargoes as contracting parties sought to optimise cargo space on vessels. 🚢 In this edition of the Skuld Charterer, Josh Williams from Skuld Hamburg’s office discusses the contractual background, the various aspects of cargo stowage, and potential liability and exposures from a charterer’s perspective. BREAKING: Multiple ocean carriers have started omitting the Port of Charleston from sailing schedules due to worsening delays in the wake of the port system outage two weeks ago. Construction work on a toe wall at Wando Welch Terminal combined with the software system issue has led to 10-day waiting times for vessels as of May 29, with vessels at the North Charleston Terminal seeing delays of around 2 days. The South Carolina Port Authority has stated that the waiting times for Wando Welch should decrease to 2-3 days over the next few weeks. However, various carriers have decided to omit the Port of Charleston in the meantime, with some removing calls from mid-June through mid-July. Although there have been no formal announcements of these omissions, we are now seeing updated sailing schedules for some vessels departing at the beginning and middle of June omitting the Port of Charleston. The 70s corridor is a key part of the national freight distribution system, spanning over 2,150 miles and connecting the Midwest to both coasts. The Bi-State region relies heavily on this essential corridor of interstates as a crucial transportation thoroughfare, with numerous companies having locations on both sides of the Mississippi River and conducting business with suppliers and customers across state lines. This results in a constant flow of goods and materials. The corridor is adjacent to St. Louis Lambert International Airport, making it an ideal location for freight distribution, and boasts convenient access to two regional airports. The location’s easy access to major highways, interstates, six Class I railroads, and water transportation networks makes it a strategic location for companies looking to move goods efficiently and cost-effectively. In our last Toolbox Talk, we reviewed the Nova Scotia Securing Loads on Vehicles Regulations, which outline the standards and requirements for safely securing loads transported on motor vehicles within the province. We want to ensure that all our drivers are up-to-date and informed about the regulations concerning load securement in Nova Scotia. All drivers must familiarize themselves with these regulations to ensure compliance and, most importantly, to prioritize the safety of themselves and other road users. If you are interested in reviewing this regulation, here is the link: https://lnkd.in/edKQz6-k

Pleased to be able to raise the profile of an important local issue this week across local TV and Radio. A1 Road safety is a hugely important issue for the residents and businesses I represent, but also the wider region. There are far too many accidents on the A1 through Lincolnshire, leading to fatalities and serious injuries, but also major disruption for businesses and motorists as a result of frequent and lengthy closures following incidents. In the immediate future we are calling for the Department for Transport and National Highways to reconfigure priorities, and use HS2 money to urgently upgrade accident hotspots on the A1 where access points and crossings are inadequate and unsafe. Longer term, recognising the A1 is a critical artery between north and south, we want to see real investment to upgrade the A1 in our region.

Some interesting things in this article. I imagine most of you reading are familiar with the concept of General Average, and how it's used, for example in the 2018 fire on board the Maersk Honam, and to refloat the Ever Given. From the article - "GA is a maritime principle where all parties involved in a sea voyage share any losses incurred. The share a shipper will pay correlates with the share of the cargo." But also at the end of this article, they write "General average costs will also likely be used to cover the bridge reconstruction and associated costs." This is the million dollar question. Experts say no, but for The Loadstar to publish this, has some scratching their heads. Could this be possible?
Dali cargo owners face massive costs if general average is declared - The Loadstar

You can see the evidence of road trucks with containers blocking roads to distribution centres in the Western Cape area due to the Cape mainline (rail line)being closed due to the wash-aways of the rail line and damage to the OHTE. What is the ETR for repairs and reopening of the line? or is there an alternative and has TFR thought of such an alternative?

This month's #TMI Briefing for #MPP: Positive demand indicators and booking activity combined with higher utilisation of the fleet, both caused by traditional market movements and the additional ton-miles arising from circumnavigating the Red Sea risk area, lead to a slight upward movement in the TMI. We observe that some charterers are willing to pay rates above the TMI level to strategically secure cargo space to cater to their clients' future demand and to strengthen their services. #marketupdate #maritime #shipbroking

Continual investment for the future... Associated British Ports & DP World are ensuring the largest ships in the world can be accommodated in the port city of #southampton by widening the approach channel to comfortably get 400m long Cat 6 & 7 containerships "around the knuckle" to berths SCT1-4 whilst another ship of the same size is handled on SCT5. Also, widening the channel means other cruise and cargo vessels on berths 101-109 can be comfortably accommodated whilst these giant ships arrive and depart the container terminal. Boskalis have various vessels carrying out the work. With forthcoming alliance changes, there could be the potential of up to 4 or 5 of these giants calling every week in addition to the other deep & short sea container services. #hubport #shipping #logistics #location #globaltrade #containershipping #thesolent #hampshire Maritime UK Solent Solent Partners Hampshire Chamber of Commerce Ernst Schulze Andrew Bowen Aart Hille Ris Lambers Sarah Dougherty John Trenchard Alastair Welch
