Reposting for greater reach. This was a timely symposium, especially for those who are technically inclined and interested in the science of climate change. Another positive aspect of the workshop was the interdisciplinary nature of the discussions, which brought together related issues from public health, energy, and agriculture. The whitepaper will be available shortly on the website. #climatechange #columbiaclimate #columbiaclimateschool #heatwave

Scientists and policymakers agree that the Bay Area needs 100,000 acres of tidal marsh to remain a healthy environment and properly prepare for sea level rise. For adequate wetland restoration and shoreline protection strategies, it will take around $110 billion in funding. Current funds are not enough to meet the restoration needs of the region, especially since the proposed state budget for this year slashes $450 million in sea level rise adaptation funding. The state needs a climate bond. Currently, legislators are working to pass a bond to raise billions for climate resilience in the state that could potentially show up on the 2024 ballot. To learn more about the current stages of the climate bond and who we support this upcoming year, check out our blog. https://lnkd.in/gfgDgTRP

It was a great space for learning about the trends in climate science from the perspective of U.S. researchers. Some of the amazing topics were: - Rare event simulations and machine learning. - Oceanic heat waves. - Measuring and modeling physiologically relevant urban heat. - Mental health and air temperature. - Simulating adaptation of urban climates to future extreme heat - And so on. Additionally, I learned that the Red Cross has a group of people working on topics related to heat waves, and that there are cooling centers for extreme heat relief in Hong Kong and Waterloo (Ontario).

Aspects of this circumvention are already underway since 2021, with misreading of emergency acts that utilize loopholes generated by concerted strategic saturation of agencies with proposals, and then selecting project bounds in areas that have a legacy of unrectified tribal displacement, further reinforced through selective industrial-political rackets (cf SE Michigan, Northern Illinois), and emboldened by Federal and local redevelopment programs. Future fines are levied against risks of current penalties and delays on building. The housing crisis and environmental-climate policy are now ruses for irresponsible and immoral building practices that are purely investment coups.
SAA president Dan Sandweiss provides comments to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation about the proposed “Program Comment on Accessible, Climate Resilient, Connected Communities."

I agree with the 2024 State of Civil Society Report from CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation Chapter on Climate Repression as denial - as such repression of civic space #climateaction should be recognised as a form of climate denial. https://lnkd.in/duX-_HQp

Now more than ever, individuals are awakening to the importance of the indigenous worldview in an age of climatic degradation. In this archived article from the 2008 'Indigenous Intelligence' issue of Resurgence magazine, Dennis Martinez explores the tragedy of Indigenous dispossession and highlights the importance of protecting Indigenous communities in an age of climate crisis. Suggesting a move away from capitalist modes of production and transaction, Dennis highlights the Indigenous kin-centric worldview, which sees plants and animals as our relatives, as key to overcoming climate breakdown. “One of the most important tools to combat this kind of environmental injustice is procedural justice: ensuring that all affected people are informed, can express their opinions, and influence decisions. For Tribes, procedural justice is especially important. Even though they were forced off their lands, Tribes retained inherent sovereignty and maintain a government-to-government relationship with the federal government. Several federal statutes mandate Tribal consultation to inform Tribes of potential impacts to their historical and cultural resources and to protect their cultural resources.” If you are working with NW tribes consider taking part in Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI). One of the many issues that ATNI are focused on is Climate Resiliency and working through Washington Conservation Action & Native Vote Washington to get the vote out to defend Washington’s Climate Commitement Act. Let’s all forge new protocols to center our climate action with Tribal consultation.
