Be the employer of choice is not the language of healthcare. It needs to be asked inside every decision now. Decision makers need to continually ask: Will this help us be an employer of choice? For retention, more than attraction of senior medical staff. WHO forecasts a global shortage of 10m healthcare workers (clinicians) by 2030. Healthcare employs 1 in 8 people in the world. And McKinsey Health Institute report 3.2b people globally cannot reach any healthcare within an hour on foot in the world. Healthcare is sooo complex. None of this matters ultimately if you have no staff. The organisational version of put your own mask on first. A small number of hospitals and clinics understand this and have committed to change. Greater diversity in our workforce tells the community that our sector is an inclusive workforce and adequately reflects the community it serves. Developed in conjunction with other Victorian Emergency Management departments and agencies, our Emergency Management Diversity and Inclusion Framework will guide the Victorian emergency management sector's actions for creating a diverse and inclusive sector and better connecting to all of Victoria’s diverse communities. Together, the sector will identify the policy and practices that need to change to promote diversity and inclusion and introduce new measures to encourage a collaborative, respectful and open way of working. It is widely acknowledged that workplace diversity brings better thinking, richer discussions, more innovative outcomes, and a more inclusive workplace for everybody.
