The “Paving Pathways: Gendering Peace for Policy and Practice" project, developed within Salzburg Global Seminar's Asia Peace Innovators Forum, stands out as a transformative effort that leverages global policy frameworks to empower peace practitioners in the Global South. By assembling a peace repository of real-world experiences and challenges faced by practitioners, particularly women and young people, the project aims to produce an edited book of resources, which would feed into a comprehensive practitioners’ toolkit. The diversity of the project team is a strength to this initiative, as it builds on experiences and expertise from varying contexts across six countries. The team strongly believes that this collaborative knowledge exchange would help to bridge existing gaps between policy and practice in peacebuilding. In doing so, the project reshapes the landscape of peacebuilding knowledge, fostering a more inclusive, violence-free, and gender-equal society. Overall, this intervention strongly aligns with the Asia Peace Innovators Forum's mandate of exchanging region-led best practices and experiences from interdisciplinary sectors seeking to shape long-term peace, stability, and South-South cooperation. The ESDN is organizing its first ever Young Civil Servant Workshop, which will take place in Vienna on the 15th and 16th of April 2024 and focus on Transformative Policies, especially regarding the aspect of Intergenerational Equity. The Sustainable Development Goals envisage a planet inhabitable not only for the present, but also for the future and are therefore inherently linked to the wellbeing of different generations. The workshop in Vienna will look at the area of transformative policies from an intergenerational equity perspective. What are the main challenges in this regard? How can we use intergenerational equity as a resource in policymaking? To what extent are the SDGs providing and supporting intergenerational equity and (how) can this be elevated in a post-2030 policy framework? What can young civil servants do to support this process? These questions will guide us through an interesting and exciting 1.5 days with inputs from experts, as well as a lot of time to exchange and develop ideas together. The Workshop will seek to bring together young civil servants from around Europe, aged 35 or younger, to learn and discuss on the topic of intergenerational equity. Insight and solutions that shift the dial 🌟 Last month we got together with new elected members and our partners in the House of Commons to launch the first report of our "Commission into Breaking Down Barriers to Employment" with The Purpose Coalition. We heard from our front line about experiences in vulnerable households and what's working to tackle poverty, especially child poverty, through better employability provision. In the UK, employability is such a critical piece of the puzzle, yet current strategies often fall into the same patterns as before. While it’s great to see this issue on the political agenda, we need to focus on what actually works to address the root causes, not just the symptoms. At the Wise Group, we’ve always championed a more holistic approach, one that doesn’t just stop at financial aid but looks at the full spectrum of support that individuals and families need to move out of poverty. From what we’ve seen on the ground, initiatives like Relational Mentoring can lead to real, measurable outcomes. The key is making sure that resources are used smarter, not just increased, and that we cut through the red tape to focus on real impact. A huge thank you to Rt Hon. Justine Greening, Lord Walney, all the elected representatives and partners who joined us and contributed to this vital conversation. The way forward isn’t about spending more - it’s about using what we have in ways that really make a difference. Lots more to do! The four main themes were: 1) Community participation and collaborative governance; 2) Ensuring inclusiveness of youth, women, and other potentially marginalized groups; 3) Articulating governance institutions to coordinate multilateral, regional, national, and local decision-making; and 4) A case study of resilience programming under the Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) effort.
