ICYMI AI for Peace – Harnessing the Complementarities between New York and Geneva "With its focus on humanitarian action, global governance, and disarmament, the international Geneva ecosystem is well-suited to contribute to the development of robust ethical standards for the use of AI, including in peace-related activities. These standards should ensure transparency, accountability, impartiality, and protection of human rights, while using AI’s data processing power to identify potential conflict patterns and improve both the prevention and the response. With its policy innovation capabilities, the New York ecosystem has a lot to contribute to this field. It can work towards international consensus to ensure that AI’s role in peacekeeping missions and diplomatic initiatives is both effective and ethically sound. TL;DR - U.N. adopts first resolution on AI ⛑️ The resolution calls for the U.N.'s 193 member states to adopt "effective safeguards" for AI use and promote "responsible and inclusive" development. 🔐 Advocates for the protection of personal data, AI risk assessments, and the safeguarding of human rights. 🗓️ The AI resolution targets using AI to advance the U.N.'s 2030 goals, including ending hunger and poverty, improving health, and universal education. 🪖 Also clarifies that the U.N's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its charter's goal of eradicating war also apply to AI development. As armed conflicts persist globally, the role of digital technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), in mediation processes is becoming increasingly prominent. Traditionally, peacemaking has been a human-centered endeavor, but the influx of AI poses both challenges and opportunities. This project aims to explore how AI can enhance our understanding of negotiation dynamics, bridging the gap between violent and non-violent forms of negotiation to pave the way for peaceful political settlements. Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the way we live, and at a rapid pace. Yesterday, the Council of the EU unanimously voted to approve the Artificial Intelligence act, a pioneering law which aims to harmonise rules on artificial intelligence across the bloc. Going forward, policymakers must strike a balance between innovation and safeguarding, ensuring that AI’s potential is harnessed while Europe’s sovereignty, control and ethical responsibilities are upheld. The AI Act is an important first step in these efforts. Here, Youssef Travaly, Senior Fellow for Digital at the Africa-Europe Foundation (AEF), reminds us of the profundity of the change that is being brought about by AI, reiterating the importance of addressing and adapting to this transformation.
