Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.

It’s difficult to imagine the future when the present is so challenging. It’s also difficult to “accelerate progress” when <15% of #SDGs for 2030 are on track, and we are seeing real regress on several issues. Yet the principles of working collectively towards sustainability, for all people and a healthy planet, leaving no one behind, based on human rights, are more important than ever in my lifetime, and for the present and future of all children. So count me in a see you around the Summit and at #UNGA in September.

History is unfolding before our eyes. These are days that could define the future of our world. The United Nations is calling for a “Summit for the Future,” promising “#Multilateral_Solutions for a #Better_Tomorrow.” This vision will take shape on September 23-24, 2024, in New York City. António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN since January 2017, has championed this summit as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to #reinvigorate global action, #recommit to fundamental principles, and further develop the frameworks of multilateralism so they are fit for the future.” A chance for the world, but haven’t we heard such lofty principles before? Summit of the Future 2024: UN member states adopt “Pact for the Future” It gives me great pleasure to read this headline after being absorbed in the workings behind this Summit for the past few months. On Sunday, 22 September 2024, world leaders gathered at the 79th United Nations General Assemblies to adopt a foundational agreement, the Pact for the Future. The Pact strives for a multilateral effort on collective action as a “step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism”, focusing on five main areas of development. Over the past few months, we kept ourselves abreast of the amended revisions of the Pact, analysing its benefits and potential flaws as a global recommitment to multilateralism. As a non-binding agreement, it brings its complications, however, it has "provide[ed] an essential basis for action — a floor, not a ceiling, for the stepped up cooperation we need in a turbulent world".
