In towns and cities across the country, rough-sleepers are a common sight on our streets. They are the visible evidence of the UK’s ever-present problem of homelessness. While in some parts of the UK, levels of rough-sleeping have stabilised, in others the figure has risen sharply. Official figures from the first part of 2024 show that rough sleeping increased in every region of England compared to the previous year. The largest increase in the number of people estimated to be sleeping rough is in London, where there were 1,132 people this year, compared to 858 people in 2022, an increase of 274 people or 32%. The housing and homelessness crisis in the US is reaching alarming rates with nearly half of all renters paying more than 30% of their income towards rent and utilities, according to a study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. A lack of affordable housing, combined with the end of federal pandemic assistance, has contributed to a 2023 record-high of over 650,000 homeless people across the nation, per the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Our Report for America corps members have been on the ground documenting this rise in homelessness, highlighting the individual scope of the crisis, and revealing new solutions that local communities are experimenting with to address the housing epidemic. Today we mark #NationalHousingDay to bring awareness and action to the issue of homelessness. The rising cost of living, on top of the economic hardship many felt during the COVID-19 pandemic, has had a deep impact on people – including those who have never been housing-insecure before. The government released a 10-year National Housing Strategy in 2017 to reverse Canada’s housing and homelessness crisis. Six years later, there is growing evidence that the Strategy is far behind on its goals of halving core housing need and eliminating homelessness by 2030. It is not meeting the needs of Indigenous peoples and disadvantaged groups. We need effective, long-term solutions to uphold Canada’s commitment to the right to housing. #NationalHousingDay

🪧Would it surprise you that many cases of potential homelessness in the CEE region are not being identified and opportunities to prevent homelessness are being missed? Better connections between social service providers and more affordable housing will help to recognise and support those at risk of homelessness, avoiding more people being pushed into homelessness. If you are in any doubt you must read our feasibility study 👉 https://lnkd.in/gJekFjbR #HousingLedCEE #HousingLedBalkans #SocialHousing #Housing2030
